Never owned a bmw or mb before but if I were to go with one or the other, what are things I should expect?

Need more details. What Model Lexus are you going from. What model of BMW or MB do you want to go to?

Follow all maintenance schedules religiously, my family has owned mostly German cars for years and we haven't had any of the "everything breaks because its not a toyota" problems everyone bitches about here. In fact our Japanese cars have required more repairs than our German ones, and our American ones the least.

Importantly, find a good dealer and service advisor, some of them are hit and miss.

Depending on what model you are jumping to, there is nothing to expect just by switching manufacturers.

Like going from a Toyota to a real Luxury (MB) or Sports (BMW) maker. Unless you currently own probably one of the only genuine Lexuses (LS).

depends on the model(s). I think you'll find most of the bmws to bit more "sporty" and "firm" than the a Lexus overall. For the mercs it'll depend more on which model(s).

overall sportiness of the brand and/or firmness of the suspension: Lexus < MB < BMW

put another way, overall cushiness in the large flagship sedan category: Lexus > MB > BMW

otherwise just stick with lexus. If you're going for entry 3 series or c300 you are in for a huge disappointment (no xenons, tacky trims, ugly wheels, 0-60 in 7 seconds..............)

Yea as said less reliabile and more trips for maintaince/repair.

If its under warranty and you don;t mind the hassle of taking it back for repairs and maintaince then european cars can be great. But once out of warranty they can nickle and dime you to death, esp if you do not do the repairs yourself.

I would either stay Lexus or look at the new CTS if you want a new car.

German cars are unreliable, just ask any tech at a German car dealership.. (knows a guy who works at a BMW/Mini dealership)

German cars are also boring at this point by virtue of ubiquity.

Sorry, I'll take Italian, British, etc any day over the sea of derivative Germans out there.

Does driving a rare car make you cool? I must have missed the memo.

Um no...there are plenty of reasons not to buy Honda or Toyota that have nothing to do with just wanting something more rare.

Sure, but you're still conveniently ignoring the driving crux of the luxury car market.. the desire for something more exclusive. Otherwise, we'd all be in Corvettes instead of Ferraris right?

I'm not saying people don't buy cars to be "exclusive" or to own the more "rare" car. I just think it is a really stupid reason to buy a car and you were purporting it as the reason you would buy a shitty british car over a German car. Now you could tell me solid reasons that you like a Jaguar over a BMW, but just telling me that you'd buy a Jaguar just to be different sounds lame IMHO.

Lame or not, it's one of the reasons people buy one brand over another. "Too many people are getting Lexuses so I'm getting a BMW"... "Too many people have BMWs so I'm getting an Audi instead".

I said I would take a non-German car because they are too boring as there are too many... that's an extremely good reason and not at all "lame" if your goal is to "stand out", and face it, that's a lot of people's goals in human society.

The only German I would consider is a Porsche, actually. And yes, while I do like BMWs and Benzes, the fact that everyone owns one is a fairly large deterring factor.

Now if only Porsche made better looking cars.
