Going from KT266A to nForce 415-D...what a bumpy ride :(

Did you test with the bare minimum of PCI cards and IDE devices in it? I know its a pain in the ass to set up the OS sometimes, especially NIC settings, but you should always begin trouble shooting like this! You need to isolate whether or not the power supply isn't crapping out under full load, too.

that sounds really strange. did you try disabling everything onboard and then pulling everything but your graphics card and put mem timings on conservative?

what are you rail voltages too? sometimes a weak 5 volt line can be the culprit, and it could be a result of poor mosfets on the mainboard and not necessarily the powersupply.

also, try disconnecting or swapping cdrom drives and use 1 at a time. i've had a cd drive prevent a board from booting one time, so you never know.

Here's a dumb question - did you format your hard drive and reinstall Windows, or just clear out the device manager of motherboard devices and reboot?

The power supply handled 6 PCI cards and a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive. I think it can handle 2 PCI cards and the onboard stuff. I just got finished shuffling around the two PCI cards in different slots. Let's see how it goes.

It's a brand new drive with a clean install of Windows XP. Got both the hard drive and the mobo from NewEgg yesterday.

I'll try taking out cards next, but I can't post without my modem installed😉

Are you sure your IDE devices have the proper jumper settings.

Please tell me that you are joking!!:Q😉

Anyway, I cleaned off the processor and HSF and put on a fresh layer of heatsink compound and it was still locking up. I'm gonna switch out this wireless optical mouse next. The processor temps do appear to be a bit lower though since I redid the heatsink goop.

Hey, it's happened to the best of them. 😀 Random crashing can be caused by wrong jumper settings. Also, since you're using a new hard drive, have you tried a different one?

NFS4, I assume you're using a P4 power supply with the +12V connector?

Yes. I unplugged the +12 connector the last time I had my case open to see if that was the cause of anything (the NV7-133R has that P4 connector to supply extra juice to power hungry CPU fans).

You're only prolonging your agony.

You don't know how close I am 🙂

Finding a Socket-478 mobo with onboard NIC and USB 2.0 should be easy, but finding one with nForce/Audigy/Santa Cruz level audio will be a bit difficult.

that doesnt exist nfs4. the cmedia sound aint much better then a sblive if at all. Just get another TBSC 😉

Well, the nForce was known as the "Crush" chipset... perhaps a good crush would solve the problem? 😀
[duck]

I think that it could have possibly been the placement of the PCI cards. It's been up for over an hour or so now without any lockups (it normally would have locked up by now). I'll leave it ripping this video file while I go to bed and let it run while I'm at work in the morning.

the usual things I try when I don't know what the problem is, is stripping the machine down to the basics.

video, cpu, ram.

add one part at a time. when you find which part is causing the problem, try different pci slots, or new drivers.

my last install locked up repeatedly the first day til I switched video card drivers, despite them working for me on my last install.

always, try using a different driver version.

Don't tell you haven't heard about the built-in sound of the nforce chipset (APU or audio processing unit).

Just as a reference, my Asus A7N266-e /1G duron runs like a clock at 38C. It is in a nice big Antec case with 2 solid, but quiet, case fans. I am using onboard everything and have NO PCI cards installed. It gets a lot of music time. Though I hear it did lock up playing a cracked verison of GTA3 recently. The game plays fine on my Shuttle AK31/ 1.2G Atholon/ GF2 gts system.

NFS4, we must think alike, I also went to the Shuttle after infant failure of a ECS K7S5a.

I woke up and it was still going and had finished ripping the video. Maybe it was just an IRQ conflict with the modem or the TV tuner. Anyway, things seem to be good so far 😀

Hurrray!!!!!!!!😀

hi nsf4,
exactly the same thing happened to me inthe beginning on my switch from the ak31 to the nv7. turned out that it was my ibm 10k scsi drive going bad. so i couldnt really blame the mb. mine is totally rock solid now *but* the temperatures that i read are about 8 degrees hotter than they were on my ak31a. i cant believe that we both screwed up the heat sink installation so i think that the temperature sensor readout must be different between the two mbs.
also, by the way, my 2nd machine is an 1.6a on an asus p4s333. it should really be my primary machine. it is rock solid at the easy 2.13 overclock and has been running prime95 24/7 for 2 months now on winxp pro. if you are stiull thinking of going intel. i've found this setup to be great.
good luck

rant against XP.

I've got P4 1.6a and it was OC'd to 2.2. i reset the bios to default cause i wanted to take out some fans and make my system quieter.

unfortunately resetting the bios screwed up hal and win xp wouldn't fix. 🙁. if i worked at it enough i coulda fixed win xp, but i didn't want to mess with it so i installed win2k instead.

just a warning to oc'ers. becareful with win xp.
