Man, 120Hz is a hard thing achieve if you want perfect details(even with no MSAA) on today games... For BF4 you will need a little more than 7990(Maybe two 290-X) to achieve the ~120 FPS mark in BF4.

not really. HD 7970 / R9 280X CF at 1100 - 1150 mhz should keep you playing smoothly at 1080p ultra 4x msaa in BF4 at avg 120 fps with mins around 90+ fps.

At OP's resolution, I don't see a game that would go from unplayable to playable with the side-grade.

Sorry, just isn't worth it to me based on available data.

In fairness, can you please try to be a little more objective with regard to OP's setup?

- Using outdated average benchmarks with outdated drivers - check
- Using all resolutions instead of directly linking OP's resolution - check
- Ignoring that OP bought 7970GE edition, not a standard 925mhz 7970 - check
- Ignoring that 7970 OC beats 580 OC by 40-50% on average - check
- Ignoring that OP's 580s had 1.5GB of VRAM which is a bottleneck in many games and his new cards have 3GB of VRAM - check
- Ignoring that his $440 7970GE CF is 39% faster in BF4 and is beating $700 GTX780Ti OC.
- Ignoring that his $440 7970GE CF/7990 is providing performance similar to GTX780Ti OC for a lot less $.
- Ignoring that Mantle should speed up BF4 performance by another 15-20%; if not, since the OP bought his cards for only $220, he can sell them easily without much loss in value, if any.

$440 for 7970GE in CF is a smoking value right now considering that a single GTX770 2-4GB is $320-$390. Also, the Vapor-Xs can overclock to 1150-1200mhz. In 12 months from now, the OP can sell each of those 7970GEs for $130, or a loss of value of $180 on both. This is not a lot given the amount of power he'll have in the next 12 months.

So 90 to 100+ FPS is meaningful? lol.

You are reading the wrong data. Stock HD7970GE/7990 trades blows with an overclocked $700 GTX780TI.

How about $1000 GTX780 OC is just 17% faster than $440 HD7970GE in BF4? Ouch!

There isn't a single setup right now that even comes close to the price/performance of 7970GE CF for $440.

Go back to anandtech.com and pick GPU 2013 then compare the GTX 580 with the 7970 and you'll notice that the 7970 blows the socks off a GTX 580. You made a wise decision. I'm jealous.

Yeah I have no idea what people are talking about here. 580s are selling for $175 to $190 on eBay, and overclocked 7970s will use the same power as the outgoing 580s so he doesn't have to worry about overloading the PSU. So he just gained 30% performance minimum with 25% power consumption, or ~40-50% more performance with roughly equal power consumption if he overclocks for a total of ~$40 per card. Anyone who doesn't think that was a good upgrade is delusional

Maybe Radeon does better FPS/$ on BF4. My GTX 670 cranked at 1065/1165(stock voltages, 122% power limit and 80% fan!) can't lock 60FPS on BF4 singleplayer(Maxed out 1080p) most of time. Anyway i'm seeing Radeon achieving max scaling at 1440/1600p and beyond.

PS: Good post Russian.

Well I sold both my 580s over the weekend for $360. So my rig currently does not have a graphic card. The 7970s should be here this week. People have made good points in this topic. I am going to thoroughly test out Crossfire when I get both cards. I had a pretty good experience with SLI.

I am definitely getting new cards now. Whether I keep the 7970s or opt for a single card solution, I am not sure of yet.

If you reside in USA and can get the two 280x Vapor-X with $440 like RussianSensation said above, go ahead on it because is a awesome value! clocked at 1.1Ghz is Ares II Performance($1600 card) for $440!.

Your 7970CF will be fine. Even if you bought a 290 now, you will still need to spend more to beat your current CF setup. And who knows how much faster the next gen will be. Next year you might even be able to get two 290s for the price you paid for your 7970s. Dont sweat it.

A mere GTX 760 is about 15% faster than a GTX 580 and a 7970 is about 20% faster than a GTX 760. You made a great choice. When you get them you'll be blown away and will soon forget your slo-ass GTX 580 SLI!
