Going from 1.2 Ghz to 1.0 Ghz...
will I see a performace hit? I want my computer to be quiet!

you probably wont notice much of a performance hit in real world computing, but of course the benchmarks will be lower :)

Its a good idea. Also if you can lower the voltage supplied to the cpu, you can cut down the heat emitted.

I have a 1.0ghz AXIA t-bird

Depending on the room temp I can vary my CPU speeds from 1.5ghz@41c all the way to 866mhz@42c
Right now: 1.0ghz@37c

Anyways, I have to drop it because I don't like to run my CPU much more than 40c, so I will drop the CPU speed to keep it cooler. I have almost doubled my CPU speed from 866 to 1.5ghz in the same day, and not felt ANY speed differance. So, no I don't think you'll ever be able to tell 1.0ghz from 1.2ghz.

[edit]BTW, it is about a 10c temp differance from 866 to 1.5ghz [/edit]

Excuse me? no difference from 866 to 1.5Ghz! what are you smoking?! more importantly, what are you not doing? Are you simply just "surfing" the web? because if so, then I feel sorry you are wasting that perfectly good overclockable chip.

Any particular reason you don't want to go above 40C? Affraid you might kill 5 years off of it's 12-15 year life span?

The days are gone when you keep a computer 10 years my friend.... The oldest chip I keep in my house is no more than 2 years old. I have 3 systems, and I keep passing down what is in this one to the next one down.... then sell of the compenents from the 3rd system (low end).

Hey I respect your opinion man! But seriously, a few extra C is not gonna hurt anything, and there is a difference! wether you felt it or not!

Actually shortening the life of my CPU isn't a fear. I don't plan on using it more than 5 years at the most. But what is a problem is stability. 1.5ghz@55c is very unstable, yet 1.5@35c is rock solid. So when it's cool out I do 1.5, but when it's hot go to 1.0ghz. I never really used the 866Mhz, except one time when I had to get something done quick & didn't feel like messing around w/ the speed to see how fast I could run it at.

Understandable, but AMD approved heatsinks put the temp on the chip around 45C. AMD would not choose a heatsink to be approved if it could not sifficiantly cool the CPU. Which would mean 45C is just fine and is perfect for stability.

My P3 600@840mhz ran at 55C, and no problems with stability.

My Athlon right now is the most stable system I have ever had. I can go days without a reboot on WindowsME. My temp is 45C idle.

People still use that OS??? Wasn't it discovered that it was just an enormus virus?

Oh, just giving you crap... I had ME installed for a while and it was OK... but I do love 2000 now.

I have a 1GHz chip that'll hit 1.2GHz easily but because of the surrounding temperature (usually 100º+ outside) I keep it at 1GHz. :)

you just have to drop voltage running at 1.0 you should be able to drop your voltage significantly.

I can go months without a reboot on Windows 2000. :Q

Not a day goes by when I don't feel like giving WindowsME a boot - literally!

Good for you. Seriously. But I don't see the bigdeal of having to restart your computer 2-3 times a week. That takes what 2 minutes out of your entire week?? OH GAWD!!!!!.

As usual I respect all of your opinions on the matter, but seriously what the hell is 2 minutes?

It's almost like a competition to see who can have their system running the longest... Who cares?... It's a silly competition and I don't care to compete in a silly game.

Play some Counter-Strike, then I compete!

Anyways good day all!

Can't say that I've gone months without a reboot, but my "junkyard" system with ME only gets rebooted if:
The Power goes out.
I have to move the machine (as in when I went to Guard for 2 weeks)
Or if I decide to try a new piece of hardware in it

Reason #3 is the biggest reason I reboot it........

Maybe I'm not getting this thing right, but all of you people are arguing about havinvg your CPUs running at 51ºC and find this HOT???

I have a 1.2 GHz Althlon-B clocked to 1200@266 fsb and my idle temperature is 59ºC. However, the system is rock-solid, without hanging for at least 1 month now (running Win98 SE). The ASUS utility shows the CPU temperature to be at 59~61ºC (threshold level 70ºC) and the motherboard temperature at 35ºC (threshold at 50ºC). I'm using an AMD approved cooling device for my Althlon (COOLERMASTER CPU heatsink+fan).

Maybe you're talking about (what the ASUS utility refers as) motherboard temperature instead of CPU temp??

Explanations please!!

Thanks!

Amen GCJ that is the poin't I was trying to make. People thing 45C is hot and stuff... its like not even close. I know for the fact that athlons remain stable up to at least 60C though that is a bit on the hot side, it's still stable

AMD approves some of the weakest heatsinks, and using a low end heaksink THEY approve for a specifies clock speed proves to me that the Athlon remains stable at very high tempatures, and it should!.

Don't get me wrong, the cooler the better as with everything, but come on, no one needs to worry about 50C on their CPU temp.

and FYI GCJ we ARE reffering to the CPU temp and not the motherboard, BUT it's been said many times that the senser's from motherboard to motherboard very so much, that it's not even reliable to compare.

:)
