Going from 0 commute work from home gig ...

... to a two hour daily commute starting tomorrow.

Yay for me.

From up at 8am to up at 5:30am.

Damn!
Hope you have a decently efficient vehicle. I sure would cry making that commute in my 16mpg Dakota.
Even more so in the winter when bad roads can share the shit out of me in that truck. I mean, I always maintain control, except for when I momentarily don't.

2 hours each way or round trip? 1 hour each way is not sooooo bad; 2 hours each way would drive you insane (I used to go 90 minutes each way).

Audiobooks, podcasts or talk radio will pass the time much faster than music.

That's my commute right now! Prolly a bit more considering the shitty evening traffic, but I don't want to admit that.
As others have said, I hope it's at least a good job.

This too. I'm assuming you mean 1 hour each way. I find time passes just fine listening to the radio, but I suppose that depends on your tolerance for hearing the same stuff over and over (I at least have several stations to swtich around). Can't comment on the audio book/talk shows since I haven't tried either.

Your idea of "decently efficient" differs from mine. 😛
I'm passively on the lookout for a new car, and I'm rather disgusted that it's not terribly easy to find a car today that is even as efficient as my aging 13 year-old Elantra, which peaks at 35mpg highway. Come on people, 13 years and most of what's out there seems to be in the 20-25mpg area?

Either way, I think the time lost is the worst part. 2 hours a day? (or 4, if that's 2hrs both ways) That's just nuts. I prefer a commute of 40min or less, I guess because that's what I was acclimated to. Now that I have a 4-6 minute commute, well, I'm spoiled. (Filling up on gas every 1.5-2 months isn't bad either.) I think if my job were to get moved to the other end of town, I'd consider packing up and moving closer.
Of course, part of that has to do with winter driving. It can be 30 minutes in good weather, but when it snows, which it does a lot in Erie, that can increase to 90 minutes, assuming there are no accidents along the way.

Moving closer to your job can be a good investment if you value your free time. (Though this assumes that you don't have family members who are attached to various aspects of the current locality.)

I feel your pain! My commute on GOOD day is 1 hour 45 minutes (one way). On a bad day (which is any Thursday, Friday or three day weekend) is over 2 hours. The longest it has ever taken me was 9 hours 45 minutes to get home.

I live about 58 miles from work and would LOVE to live closer but can't afford to live anywhere closer to work.

I do have to say that my commute now is better than it was before though. I used to work from home but when I had to go into the "office" it was a 4 to 5 hour drive, one way, to get there.

Books on Tape/CD and the radio are the only things that keep me (semi) sane on the drive now though.

You must live somewhere with not a lot of traffic. That's pretty good time for 58 miles. Here in LA area it takes you at around an hour to drive 20 miles during the regular work times.

That's horrible. How expensive is the housing where you work? I imagine you would have to fill up on gas at least 3 times a week. I'll guess an average of $25 a tank and that puts you at $300 a month. Are there any basic apartments (hell, even a room from a family) you could rent out? I assume it would cost more, but in this case I would value the time more than the money.
Granted I don't know your situation and you say you can't afford to live closer, but I hate my commute and it's only half of what you have. Way to put things in perspective, jerk!

Two hour total commute although most of it is on public transportation.

I do not think I will mind the commute so much as it will give me time to prep for the day and read but I am still trying to figure out how I will fit in my one hour gym time as well as other crap like walking the dog and making dinner.

Any recommended podcasts that are science/tech related?

I will be negotiating a partial work from home (1-2 days a week) after I've proven myself.

Howstuffworks!

Welcome to my world 🙂 Up at 4:30AM and reach work at about 7:10AM. Leave work at about 4:40-4:50PM reach home at about 6:45-7:00PM

EDIT: Just read it again, yours is 2 hours total. Mines about 2 hours each way :/

7 mins from the office ftw
Saturday I helped move my nephew into an apartment overlooking Seattle Center, his is about a 15 minute walk now or 5 minute bus ride. I always said I'd never live in a city but this place was dirt cheap and has a very nice view. I'm a bit jealous:$

+1 on mugs solution (especially the podcasts) because if you listen to music it will repeat very quickly.

Yeah, but you're never going to have an hour commute anywhere in Erie. Everything is accessible within 30 minutes from I-90, 38th street, the Bayfront, etc. You'd have to be commuting to Meadville or something. On top of that, there's really no part of Erie that is prohibitively expensive, so nobody is forced into a long commute. It's different in cities with larger, more expensive metro areas and distant residential. Some people have to commute to earn a living wage.

That said, I would not put up with driving two hours a day to/from work.

A guy I work with has a 10 minute commute but pays $1800 month for a one bedroom apt.

I have a family so I can't really move in closer to work because of the cost of living closer in. My wife and I make some sacrifices to have the life we live (she is a full time mom) but there are definately days when we look at the cost of all day child care versus staying where we are. Plus the cost/upkeep of another car (we have one now). All in all we are willing to make the sacrifices we make to save the money we would otherwise spend to get ourselves completely out of debt. Been doing this commute for more than 5 years now, will hopefully be able to end it late this year!

Exactly. 🙂

I grew up in a rural area, where it took 30-40 minutes to get to anything better than cows and a feed mill. Now I'm only about 6 minutes from a section of Buffalo Road which has a grocery store, a K-mart, two hardware stores, a few Autozone-type places, gas stations, and so on.

Well then, y'all's crazy. Us hick folk'll stay here in our cheap, simple towns. 😛
$450/month + utilities gets me an ancient 2BR apartment with an extra storage room past the kitchen, and my own washer and dryer.
