In this same crowd myself. Except I have this semester and the next and I'm done with a second degree in another discipline. I graduated with my first degree in 2007 and got laid off from my management training program in 2008. Couldn't find a job so went back to school. Hopefully there is a better job market in May.

i think i'm going to have to go to school for something, even if it is just to update my current skillset, to get a new job. no one wants to hire me. hell i rarely even get a response to my resume.

i have problems even getting callbacks on entry level jobs.

Argh. Not a good sign with me getting laid off next week.

I think I'll be able to get a job within a couple of months if I try, just I don't want to settle for something with no good advancement potential and/or big paycut.

I took a job that was a small paycut (1.50 an hour), had no benefits, no promotion possibilities, and they don't give raises at all. I spent about 1 month looking and took the 1st thing that wanted me. If I could do it again I would have gone to school for something.

If I hadn't taken this, I'd still be looking or maybe working retail, like Best Buy or something.

This is what I'm talking about---you're jumping the gun. How about getting a job in that company's mail room? Be a secretary? Maybe some IT work?

Or... I could just go for a Phd instead of wasting time being in the mail room, or secretary. I've thought about IT, but again, I want to get a career started in aerospace or energy (and research to related topics at a university is something I would also be fine with doing - hence my reason to go for a Phd).

Though a lot of government laboratories I've been speaking with want HIGHER degrees. A lot rarely higher a BS at least in my field. Though some also told me to speak with them again if/when I enroll at a university again because then I would become eligible for fellowships that pay for college, and hire you when finished.

And like others have mentioned, I don't want to have to settle for the first thing that becomes available. (unless I get lucky and it is actually a great position)

GREs in another 2-3 weeks. I'm going to get me ass kicked in the verbal section. :(

Why is now any different?

If I got an offer on the same level as yours there's no way I'd take it. One month isn't a long time in this market. I plan to aim high (no more than couple % paycut, similar benefits, and job itself is rewarding to me as far as learning and advancing) and if after a few months I find it is completely unreasonable, then I'll compromise on certain factors.
