Going back to play some oldies (Fallout series)

In particular Fallout 1 right now. Had to fiddle to get it running (game comes with both a DOS and Windows version! only needs DX 3! :shocked: ). And it's taken some getting used to. I've never played a game quite like it. I'm only about 45 minutes into it (just got to Vault 15).
Anybody here ever play it? What do I have to look forward to?
And if you haven't played it and are thinking about Fallout 3, do you think you'd want to play the first 2?

I tried to play Fallout 1 and 2 recently...and just couldn't - I don't have the patience like I use to.

Fallout is a bit long in the tooth, but a good story is a good story, and you've got to love the grim atmosphere and dark humor.

Lots of dark humor, some very good dialogue, a very very memorable encounter at the end, lots of freedom to do things your way. Not much difficulty when you learn what to do though - especially the second one is a twink fest. Only Morrowind is more abusable (albiet Morrowind is more abusable by a thousandfold.) An annoying interface, some very annoying battles with lots of neutrals which WILL make you turn animation speed to highest if you haven't already done so.

I'm personally quite fond of the actual mechanics underlying combat, though the second one made a pair of very poor choices in including certain high powered weapons at the end, and it really, really, really needed a superfast mode where uninvolved parties just teleport, or maybe just have everybody teleport.

i love rpgs...baldurs gate, torment, icewind dale, nwn, kotor to name a few...but i never played fallout and i regret it...i read about it and i want to play it before fallout 3 but its such an old game and i dont know if i can play it on vista/xp now

it plays just fine on xp, not sure about vista though
