A bunch of my friends drove up the AlCan before it was paved. Great trip, worked at the salmon canneries to raise money to get back home.

Are you planing on doing any hiking or fishing or just sight seeing?
I'll be doing some 'light' hiking nothing more than 4-5 hours at a go i think, i believe the Dempster highway and parts of the Top of the World highway are not paved yet but i'll be going over both in my minivan, can't be any worse than Labrador was last year. I haven't fished in a long time but would be up for it maybe, i don't have any gear though. It's about 7800 km to get to Inuvik which Google calculated as an 89 hour drive one way, Fairbanks is an additional 20 hours 1400 km) if Top of the World Highway is open. It's going to be one hell of a long drive :)

That sounds awesome! I may be up there in the next few years as well. :)

Just booked a beachfront cabin on Kauai for eight nights in August. Really looking forward to it. And maybe San Diego again for comicon, but I really should save up for the Hawaii trip.

Thinking about heading up to Vancouver or Victoria this spring also.

I will be able to take Pearl Harbor off my bucket list finally...

We spent 5 days in Hanalei Bay last year...it was awesome (except for the 4am wake up calls from the chickens that run rampant all over the island...j/k it wasn't that bad :))...we rented a house about two blocks from the beach...

did the helicopter tour (saw the waterfall from Jurassic Park), did some snorkeling, kayaking and hiking...

Couple things from my experience I would recommend for Driving

The denali highway was awesome no towns few buildings just 135 miles of nature with amazing views.

Driving down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer and then take the Ferry to Kodiak. You can take the car but kodiak has very little roads. we just took our gear. In Kodiak we jumped off the boat and went up to the woods to hike and camp. Tons of salmon were in the river as well.

While driving down to Homer stop at Seward and whittier.

Kodiak Island does look amazing, going to have to read up on it and see if we can squeeze it in,

Did you go ocean kayaking or on one of the rivers?

Touring the Missouri is a must as long as you're over there.

it was a hiking/kayaking thing to a 'hidden' waterfall LOL (so hidden that the chickens and other similar tours went here as well)....the kayaking was about 90 minutes each way on a river...we got off, hiked a trail for about 2 miles, had lunch and swam by the waterfall and then hiked and kayaked back...

Have seen the Iowa, Alabama and Texas batteships so far...

Will cross the Arizona and Missouri off during the trip...Not sure if the Utah counts or not...

have the Wisconsin, New Jersey (flew over her several time flying into Philly), Massachusetts and North Carolina to go...

Pretty busy year for us. We were in Vienna for NYE and were in Antwerp and Amsterdam not too long ago. We've got a trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the spring and in the summer we're doing a Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, and Latvia cruise with some of the family. Picks back up in the winter where we'll be spending a week in Dec and a week in Jan in New Zealand having managed to snag first and business class award seats. We'll tag some domestic trips onto the end of some of my business trips this year so probably a weekend in Denver and Orlando with maybe one in Nashville if that project ever gets approved

I was on the exact route last year, if you have any question let me know.

I've been looking into this and Kodiak is just too far, i believe the ferry itself is a 10 hour boat ride...the Kenai peninsula does look amazing though and i want to drive through it if I have time.
