Going alone to a salsa class.

I've taken many dance lessons from several locations. There are two distinct groupings. (1) That particular location is mostly couples. This may be awkward at first, but in the end it doesn't matter since the instructor will swap partners every few minutes anyways. Of course, there is always that one couple that refuses to swap but ignore them as they just want to be ignored. (2) That particular location has a couple or two but is mostly individuals - usually with either far too many females or far too many males (it happens). This of course requires partner swapping so that everyone can learn otherwise the unbalanced males or females would never have a partner.
The partner swap means that everyone gets a chance to dance AND that you can't rely on the other person's learning. The men actually have to learn to lead and the women actually have to learn to follow.
As long as you brush your teeth before you go, you'll be just fine. In fact, you may potentially meet some nice women there. I met my fiancee at a dance.
One word of caution. There is club-style salsa dancing and then there is competition-style salsa dancing. They have very little in common. Club salsa involves a lot of fancy footwork and generally ignores the rest of the body. Competition salsa involves the whole body - footwork is important but there is hip motion, posture, arm positions, etc to consider. Most salsa lessons that I've been to are competition style. Sure, you can learn a lot from them, but after you get the footwork down after a couple of lessons, any other lesson will usually be useless in a club. You can't have the fancy spins and arm positions in a club as (1) you'd be out of place and (2) there isn't any room.

I go to hip hop classes once a week by my self. not a big deal.

I've done the same thing, been the only guy in the salsa class, trust me very hot girls in the salsa classes, good times were had by all

I doubt anyone is ever at those classes with the intention of making fun of people. It's like going to the gym. I know people who won't go because they're embarassed but really, who gives a shit? I have more respect for people who show up and have to roll off the bench in order to stand up than I do for the meat heads.

Watch out for that one! The cooking class sounds fine. The marriage thing is scary. In the 70's I was hitchiking across Canada. Drivers told me that there was a big news story about a guy hitchiking through Thunder Bay, Ontario. He got stuck there waiting for a ride and ended up married. There's supposed to be a statue of that hitchiker there. I made sure that I had a ride right through Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Love is one thing, but marriage is a legally binding contract. It can be a hassle and expensive proposition to pay off lawyers and rid yourself of a psycho spouse.
Enjoy the class. I have cooked professionally and when I was married.

I only took the ones @ UCSD when i was a student there. I just know that the SD CC's offer them. I also took one at Mt. Sac (near Los Angeles).
All the instructors I've had were very good, and very outgoing. They provide a very outgoing and fun environment. I doubt you can't go wrong with any of them. I also still suck at salsa. I haven't taken a class in a long time.

Every class I've been to has some girls that have the tendency to sweat profusely and smell rather unpleasant due to it. Some of the girls are very protective of their "personal space barrier," which makes doing some of the maneuvers difficult.
Best bet is to call and ask. Find out if most are couples, and if they rotate partners. My fiancee and I just took a ballroom class, and they definitely made us rotate. Lots of single folk, many girls who were single or couldn't get their bf to go, and some dudes as well. Call and find out, if so, go.

yup, and had a great time, after the first 5 minutes when i didn't have a partner.
apparently guys outnumber girls in this class.
so we formed a circle and rotated the women. really fun.
i'm glad i went.
