would any of these work on steam? more importantly this doesn't look like it is , or is compatible with, BG: EE at all?

Nope, gogs stuff is not on Steam. Separate service. They never sell Steam games.

Sometimes Amazon does, I think.

You don't need them to be on Steam since they are all DRM-free.

There is no always-on client. You download the installers once, on any PC not necessarily the one you will use. Install them forever, on as many PCs as you own, for the rest of your life. Then pass them on to your great-grandchildren.

The special edition on steam uses steam for multiplayer, which is actually quite helpful.

^ ah, interesting. EE is a port/remake though, like all of the HD PS3 portss of PS2 games, so I wouldn't expect buying the original to get you that.

Remember back when you had to actually pay attention?

Yea, but my attention span and memory are a lot shorter than they used to be!!!

I have to say the combat, at least in the early game is really difficult. Seems like my attacks do nothing and the enemies have basically a one hit kill. Also seems like a lot of lag and imprecision in my attacks that is from the mechanics of the game itself. My system should handle this game with ease, not sure why it is not smoother.

It is a hard game for sure. I have probably started BG1 half a dozen times over the years (never finished it) and it always feels difficult to me. The combat is so chaotic and rather unfriendly if you are colorblind as well. I still hope to finish the game one of these days but it will probably never happen.

I believe (correct me if I am wrong because it has been some time since I played) that the little target circles that represent enemies are red, while friendly characters are green. Maybe this isn't a huge deal once you learn the mechanics of the game better, but I can remember doing the training session in Candlekeep and it was a bitch trying to figure the targeting out.

It could also just be that I suck at the game too.

I must just suck too, because whether the circle is red or green, it seems about half the time when I tell the character to attack, he just stands there doing nothing or totally misses. OTOH, enemies seem to be able to hit you unerringly.

I did find that the game was capped at 30FPS in the .ini file. I tried it briefly at 60 and the characters move really fast, but I havent had time to do any combat.

I played the heck out of KOTOR 1 and 2 and both NWN games, so it is not like I am not familiar with the D&D ruleset. This game just seems brutally difficult. I haven even been able to beat the mage Temesh or whatever his name is in the very first level without cheating.

What are you playing as? If it's a mage, in D&D they do start out as 1 hit you're dead, and you need to be careful to stay ranged and actually use your spell(s).

Those are third edition. AD&D 2nd edition is quite a bit tougher.
Actually, they removed MOST of the complexities from the video games like Baldurs Gate. You're playing a watered down version of the table top experience.

I am playing as a fighter, figured that would be the easiest one. Problem is he hits me with some confusion spell first, then I cant control my character to get out of range or dodge, and another hit or 2 and I am dead.

Interesting, didnt know that. What is frustrating is I have just started, so cant have screwed up my character too much, and am still getting my butt handed to me.

I want to get these but how would they look on a 28" 2560x1440 monitor?

You can apply the widescreen mod if you want to jack the resolution up. I just fired up Planescape Torment last night on my 22" 1680x1050 monitor at (game) native resolution and I thought it looked great without doing any tinkering.

One other thing about this sale (assuming today is the last day). You get a pretty hefty discount on any of the games, so you don't need to buy the entire bundle. I picked up PS:T and BGII last night for a total sum of $8.50 or so.

Yeah, but BG uses an older D&D rule-set. In that game, stats are king! Seriously, if you didn't spend 10-20 minutes rolling your character's stats, you most likely have a poor character who will have a very hard time doing anything. Anything less than 2 perfect stats (18 on the dice, but also modified by your race) in the 2 most important stats for your character, with nothing (except cha (unless a sorcerer, which is probably the best class in the game)) less than 15. Seriously. And for melee builds, anything but a 18/00 in strength is an immediate throw-away stats wise (well, unless you happen to get 18's in EVERYTHING else).

One thing that keeps me from playing is knowing that there are all those little items scattered out in the world throughout the game that are so good I know I would need to find a list of them all to collect if playibg again.

A lot of the fun is making mistakes and doing much better the second time around. Ditto Kotor and NWN.
