I never played much AC so I'm not as qualified as some other people; but from what I hear, Alpha Centauri is much more than just "Civ in space". I have friends who are die-hard AC fans, but don't like the Civ games because of how simple/dumbed-down they are from AC.

I've always heard good things about it too, but glancing over some screens and what not, I just don't know.

I'm already over 50 games in my GOG account, I don't really want to grab something else if I've basically already got it.

I've played the Populous games on my Amiga, so I'm a little burned out on that.

Thought I had a copy of Dungeon Keeper laying around, but it might be Stonekeep.

I have all the (real) SimCities, so there's not really anything else in this batch :\

The best thing about Alpha Centauri was the design workshop where you could build your own units based on the tech you had researched thus far. There was also a fairly interesting story about the Planet that unfolded as you researched more tech.

I saw this today and I've been debating whether to pick up SMAC or not.

Is it really more than just Civ in space?

I've already got Civ's I - IV.
If it's just basically a facelift for one of those, there's not much reason for me to pick it up.

Civilization is a fun game, but when it comes to 4X games it is really simple compaired to AC, MoO, or GalCiv. Each of the above games are so much better than Civ 1-4 (never played 5) it isn't funny. And it has nothing to do with them being based in space, they just have more depth and less gamey mechanics than the antiquated Civilization formlua that never changed between any of the first 4 iterations.

Alpha Centauri is one of the greatest games ever made. I loved Civ 2, but AC allowed me to play multiplayer using 56k modem back in the day. It was epic! Besides, AC had Mind Worms!

In my estimation, Alpha Centauri is the best Civ game around, the best 4X game, and, arguably, the best game ever made. Given that if your tastes run to different genres, you might have differing rankings.

But there are a great number of things it did better than any of the other 4X games.

Finally got an account. Purchased Raptor and Wing Commander 4. Loving life. Forgot how mediocre Raptor really was. Nothing compared to Jets N Guns. WC4 was a hassle too. Controls can be clunky, mission parameters are often weird and difficult. But it is good fun.

I'd like to see a modern version. Instead of FMV use rendered scenes and give the player a crapload of choices in a huge campaign.
Also, needs a flight sim mode for custom skirmishes. X-Wing Alliance had that and I loved it.

God, I spent so many hours mastering the tracks in Motoracer. That was such a great, challenging game. And, incredibly, it ran very smoothly and looked great on my Presario 1235 laptop with no GPU (It had 3d now! iirc).

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, but some user reviews say it can't detect modern GPUs so I'm staying away for now.

Based on the reviews, I decided to try one, and got motoracer 2; maybe it'd be ok?

imo motoracer is a much better game than Motoracer 2. I still have my MR2 disc; I gave MR1 to a friend a long time ago and never got it back.

But it's not like MR2 isn't fun. It is.

I played it for a while as well.

Now you tell me. Do I need to go buy motoracer 1 for $2.99 and hope it works on 4870?

For the cost of a Big Mac - roll the dice. Maybe messing with the compatibility modes would solve the issue.

I haven't played the MR games in a while, but if you're the type of gamer that loves racing games then Motoracer is the more satisfying challenge. I remember having lot of fun mastering the tracks; some of the corners took a lot of practice and needed multiple timed moves to navigate.

MR2 is more of an arcade-style racer. Shallow and decently fun.

My understanding is that Tropico 3 == Tropico 4, is that correct? Trop4 didn't add anything but a few different buildings and missions. I played Trop4 during a Steam free weekend, but didn't buy it. Really should have. Will Trop3 satisfy me the same as Trop4 did?

EDIT: OMG, I have too many games. I just noticed I have Trop3 - Steam Edition in my playlist, not installed. LMAO. Nevermind, installing now.
