Star Wars goes without saying. Not because it's so great, but because The Godfather is awful. I don't understand how people can enjoy crime epics. To me the mafia are the scum of society, yet everybody is so quick to jump on this sympathy bandwagon. The Godfather, Goodfellas, The Sopranos, GunGrave (if you're in to anime). I don't sympathize with these scumbags, and I don't particularly like watching movies from their perspective.

I think most people would agree that the point of the Godfather isn't to create sympathy for any of its characters, but rather to show how wretched they all are.

Well, if I believed that was the case, then I would salute the filmmakers, because I now see them as so wretched that I don't want to watch any more movies about them. I don't really think that was the filmmakers' or the original author's intent, personally. The Godfather is the most prominent in a long line of movies and other media that glorifies the mafia, and I don't find that particularly entertaining.

The Godfather does not glorify the Mafia. Rather it gives an amazing insight as to just how ugly and twisted it was. Virtually every character suffered and eventually self-destructed (or was murdered). Being in or a part of the Mafia ruined everyone's lives. It is an epic of the tragedy of evil.
The first 2 are probably the greatest movies ever made.

i voted star wars but i should clarify, the original 3 star wars movies or their remakes. not the crap that was put out recently

Dammit, and now Vic comes in. Okay, I'll concede that you and NuclearNed have a pretty good point, and it's not something I really considered. Especially because I only saw the trilogy a few months ago and I had already seen many mafia glorification movies like Goodfellas. I sort of simply wrote the Godfather movies off as "mafia movies". However, I still feel like the trilogy as a whole wasn't that great, thanks in no small part to the mediocre third movie.
