Ok, pretty much the topic says it all. I'll explain the symptoms a little further though. When I play q3 (this is after a fresh formate and new install), the game seems 'fairly' smooth, although not as smooth as it was before. The problem gets worse as I play the game. The longer i play, the choppier the game gets. The choppiness doesn't seems to be entirely video related. The avg fps drop from about 120 to about 80, but the increased choppiness would denote a much greater drop in fps. (It feels more like 10-20 fps)

There are a few things that i have in my current setup that i didn't have previously. I flashed my bios, and I also installed the new VIA drivers. I also messed w/ some bios settings, one of which is called AGP agepure (that's not the correct spelling). Right now i have it set to 128MB. I also have VIDEO cacheable disabled. Below i have listed the major components of my system config:

Athlon 1gig
256 Mushkin high performance ram
Herc. Prophet 2 gf2 32 MB
IBM 30gig 75gxp
Abit ka7-100

Did you remember to patch the game? Download the latest 1.27h patch. That speeds it up a lot.

yah, i have the new patch, but 1.27g, not h
i play RA3 and, the last time i had q3 on this comp, a few months ago, 1.27h didn't work w/ the mod...
i really don't understand why this is happening...
could it be that the bios update screwed me up!?!? that shouldn't be the case...

Could be a Bios setting not right, check & disable all video shadowing, next try setting AGP aperture to 64mb,that should be more then enough.

i took of trilinear, high detail, went to 16bit textures and color depth....nothing
i reinstalled q3...nothing......

Try increasing these settings in your q3config.cfg:

com_hunkmegs (I would recommend 128 for your system)
com_soundmegs (Play around with)
com_zonemegs (Play around with)

Is your video card overclocked? I've seen cases where it performs worse once it heats up. But usually there are visual indications. Maybe its on the edge and not showing the graphical errors.

maybe you are having memory leakages so that quake doesnt erase the memory it doesnt need. Does it do this in any other games?

do you get hard drive access frequently after about 15 mins?

I haven't installed any other games, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I do notice, though, that after I exit q3 my comp is a little slow to respond.
No, I don't notice any attempts to access the hd. I'll try to pay more attention next time i play.

funny thing...
I installed q3 in win2k and it doens't get choppy
Granted, there's about a 15fps drop in the framerate...
I hope this'll make something click in somebody head, cuz i have no idea what is going on here

well, you said that you dont get those problems in win2k. i'm guessing that win98 is giving you some sort of problems with leaky memory, or system resources. plus, a 15 frames loss in win2k isn't that bad, i'm sure you can tweak it right back.

Well, 15 fps isn't accurate. In ME i get 120-150 fps normally, but i can get even more if i change my maxfps to something higher than 150. In 2k i'm usually playing around 50-60 fps, and even lower in open areas with big lots of fighting. It's really something that gets underneath my skin....
