If you aren't on the lease...move out and let him deal w/ it. If you are on the lease...wait till he's out to class and then sell all his stuff!

seriously though what was his excuse..

i mean if you two had an arrangement why would he spend all the money..even his share of the rent...

that just seems so bizarre and way irresponsible

I take back my previous statement. You are saying that he can pay HIS rent, but can't lend you money to pay your half? My answer is now:

Don't borrow money from your roommate to pay your rent. My guess is that he has the money but decided he doesn't want to lend money to a roommate.

i think you learned a VALUABLE lesson. NEVER depend on anyone else when it comes to matters of importance.

My last year of college, I roomed with two guys I knew.

One was really laid back, the other was laid back but liked to argue (he was studying to be a lawyer). He really liked to win arguments, so sometimes we would discuss trivial stuff, but I guess that is what will make him a good trial lawyer. I tended to "agree to disagree" when he couldn't convince me (example, I liked a movie and he wouldn't), he liked to convince you, so I guess it annoyed him a little. BTW, in that instance, he had really good points, I just seemed to like the movie a little more (what can you do). They were both really good guys that I respected a lot.

Mid-year they both graduate, but one was planning to stay. On the way back from his hometown his car broke down and he couldn't come back. I couldn't afford to pay for the whole apartment, so I caleld him up so we could work something out (I was willing to pay for most of it if he could just cover what I couldn't pay on his side of the rent). He ended up saying he would still pay for his share in full. Felt bad, but there was nothing I could do about it. It seemed he slightly resented the fact that he paid, because he stopped talking to me. :( Plus, all the annoying "discussions" we had probably stretched our friendship a little too much.

Don't you split the rent? You shuld have separate mini-leases for each person. Then you don't have to worry about deadbeat roommates. Kick him out.

That isn't always the case.

What are you going to do? Pay it for him and have him owe you?

roommate was supposed to be covering me because my financial aid hasn't come in yet! (goddamned IRS!) according to the financial aid people it is supposed to be here next week.

No problem. It take around 3 months to evict. You'll have your money by then

1. You should have worked over summer and got a savings to avoid situations like this
2. Never depend on others for financial assistance, especially people you live with or your family
3. The manager probably has experience dealing with Uni students and will probably make an exception and accept late payment as soon as your Financial Aid arrives.
4. I don't blame your roomie, he's just following rule #2. He probably has the money and doesn't want to give it to you.
