it seems that a student's (living in my house) parents are taking an extended trip after visiting for senior week. i think they are chinese, but they might be taiwanese, i can't really tell. anyway, i just spent about a minute talking to this kid's mother while i was in the kitchen before i realized that she didn't understand me. and previously, i had greeted her in the hall a few times, but never got any response. now, i didn't want to strike up a long converstation or anything, but a fvcking "hello" would've been nice. even an "i don't speak english." anything to acknowledge the fact that she knew i was talking to her. how hard is that, people? teach your parents at least the simple phrases.

which reminds me, my g/f's mother has been her for almost 10 years, but because she lives in miami (and everyone speaks spanish) she simply decided not to learn how to speak. wtf? it's not that hard! my parents learned english in less than 2 years - it's not the hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its nice to know the language of the country you're living in, but how much harm does it do to you, really, if there's someone who you can't talk to?

The problem is, the United States doesn't HAVE an official language. Seriously. The Founding Fathers were debating between making French, German, Spanish, or English the "official" language, but never came to a consensus, and just skipped that part.

Look it up. It's a trivial pursuit question! lol

if only one person does it then its not a big deal but when a large amount of the popualtion starts to speak the non common language its hard to communicate in stores and places of business etc, businesses shouldnt have to hire a person to translate, u live here learn the damn langauge

Why should he? The overwhelming majority of people in the US speak English. It should it necessary to be able converse in English. Public Safety already has to cut officers and firefighters so they can hire translators. If people were not so stubborn, then things would not be a problem. BTW, I suggest you learn English yourself. I have seen many of your posts, and a majority of them are incoherent at best.

is there a law somewhere that says you have to hire someone to translate? (there could be, i really don't know)

having just lived in switzerland for half a year, I know it was a hell of a lot more uncomfortable for me than them when a storekeeper etc. didn't know english.

there's a lot of things where if people weren't so *insert quality* there would be a greater good. shrug. i like freedoms, personally. i can't imagine forcing people to learn a language.

I didn't ask that anyone be forced to do anything. I said it should be necessary. In other words we should stop hiring translators. If they don't want to learn it, then don't provide care. That isn't forcing. That is allowing them to make a decision that would be in their best interests.

having translaters is for everyone's benefit... no one wins when communication fails. what if they're trying to notify people of a fire or accident... so basically innocent people die because you wanted to have them learn english. okay.

This is coming from the guy who was all for people killing car thiefs. Your logic is pretty terrible. They HAVE the choice to learn. No one is FORCED to know only one language.

right, so it works out economically. someone hires an employee, perhaps extra and perhaps not, that can speak spanish and thus they can attract some more mexican customers.

i see it starts to get complicated when you go into firemen and things. i'm not sure that stories about public officials cutting employees to hire translators aren't exaggerated, though, and people are ultimately doing themselves more harm if they can't speak the same language as their doctor and whatnot (unless they start suing because of inadequate treatment, again no clue if that's happened or not).

if people are free to ignore or talk to whomever they please, then which languages they speak is an academic matter.

Well, some Americans have a habit of spouting "EVERYONE SHOULD LEARN GOD DAMN ENGLISH IF THEY'RE GOING TO LIVE OR VISIT MY GOD DAMN COUNTRY!" while going to France and saying "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH? ANYONE HERE SPEAK ENGLISH?" I mean, I do the same thing (I usually learn how to say "do you speak english" when visitting a foreign country) but, really, relax.. If she was an employee I'd agree with you - I don't like the hippy mentality that we should institutionally adapt to EVERY culture.. And I get REALLY annoyed when I go to a store and the waiter doesn't know english.. But if it's just someone's mom visiting then, please, don't talk to her and leave her alone.. You shouldn't be so angry about something like that..
