That costs them money for very little return and on a slow day they'd probably lose money during those hours.

Pay attention to your local newspaper once in a while. When the blue laws come up for review and possible change it's not the Jesus-freaks that are screaming about maintaining a holy day, it's small business owners who are screaming about maintaining a day off. Just buy your beer on Saturday evening or any other time during the week. It's not all that complicated.

They don't have to stay open if they don't want to. Regardless, chain supermarkets are hardly small businesses.

Learn to read, it'll really help you avoid looking like a fool. "If supermarkets and convenience stores can sell beer on Sunday morning then package stores have to stay open too." It's the package stores that are small businesses. If large stores like supermarkets are allowed to sell alcohol on Sunday then the package stores must stay open or lose their business. And yes, they do have to stay open even if they don't want to. That's the nature of the industry. If your competitors are open YOU have to be open. If customers get in the habit of going to a certain store to buy their beer on Sunday they're going to shop in the same store the rest of the time too.

That couldn't be farther from reality. I run a mom & pop store in an industry where the box stores are open from 8am - midnight. We're open from 10am - 7pm and we're thinking about closing on Sundays. (When the other guys are open) We do just fine.

I'd need about a dozen beers to make it through a church service without shooting myself.

That's why they refridgerate it! :D So you can drink it as soon as you buy it!

IL has these silly blue laws too... no beer before noon on sunday.

Must be your county, buddy. When I was going to school in Peoria, we used to close out the bars on Saturday night at 4am, go to Steak and Shake, and then go buy more beer at 6am on Sunday morning when the stores would sell again. :)

Pennsylvania finally gave in and started opening the state stores on sundays at shortened hours. Its a start.

I agree with you, and believe that legislation of morality is wrong.

The point of government is to govern the people any way they see fit. What is good for the people is their perogative. Morality is the most important thing in government. Any government that has lasted long enough started on morality, including the USA. It is when they begin to reject morality and ignore it that they start to crumble, much like the USA is crumbling.

Morality is always subjective, and there is more than one system that works. The Taliban were an "ultra-moral" government, and they ruled over (nearly) the sh!ttiest country in the world.

Also, you are wrong about the "point of government." Here in the United States, the point of the government is to reflect the WILL OF THE PEOPLE and to organize public services. It is NOT to govern as "they" see fit.

Trust me, the stores WANT to sell you the booze. It's just either state or local laws....usually it's a local law passed by those stupid christians. (not suggesting that all are...just a LARGE majority....I mean, many of them voted Bush in)

Cliffnotes:
Had a cart full of groceries, including beer.
Clerk informed OP that it was against the law (not the store's policy) to sell beer before noon on Sunday.
OP shows them! OP leaves entire cart of groceries at the check-out.

Uh yeah, I'd have to go along with anyone who thought you were being a jerk about it. It's not the store's fault. Why take it out on them?

Good thing too, because I was going to get fvcking wasted at 10AM on a Sunday. I just left my cart at the register with everything in it and walked out.

How the hell do people buy beer in time for Sunday football games? Good thing some Christians thought up this ban on beer before 12. Maybe they can all put their heads together and outlaw dancing too. Maybe censor some books. Christ.

This is a democracy. If you don't like it then vote in the next elections. Even outrageous laws are still laws. And without them we wouldn't be living in a civilization.
one vote doesn't matter.

Great attitude, should take you far in life.

This coming from a guy who doesn't vote at all.

I'm sure it's been said, but that was a pretty stupid/rude thing to do. Reminds me of the time the lady at 7-11 wouldn't break a 100 at like 2 in the morning. The guy just left his coffee there and flipped his donut up in the air onto the counter.

Let's recap. You:
  • made yourself look like a baby by walking out of a grocery store in 'protest.'
  • acted like an asshole to your local grocer by leaving a cart full of food in the checkout lane
  • wasted time, gas and energy by doing all your shopping and then leaving your full cart and walking out
All because you blamed the STORE for a STATE LAW.

Way to go hotshot! Don't be surprised if you're not treated cordially in that grocery store in the future.

Well seeing as how I'd have to come back later to buy the beer anyways, it doesnt really matter then what else I pick up at the same time. Besides, I live 3 miles from two different county lines so its very easy to just drive myself across the county border to a grocery store where I can buy my beer before noon.

Haha. I remember I was shopping at Frys for something, and at a checkout I was standing next to this pimple-face teen (looked like total nerd) who was buying a bunch of $1 items and then a porn DVD. His cashier was a gigantic black lady (each breast larger than this guy's head). She glanced over the DVD, then glanced over the guy, made this indescribable cough, stuffed it into the bag along with other crap and rang the guy up.

Poor dude was red as a lobster :)

You 'Goddamn' drunkard, this has nothing to do with religeon. This is what your state lawmakers in coordination with your state alchoholic beverage commision has come up with so every noodnick isnt running around out there gettin drunk early in the day.

I agree with you however, you should be able to buy it at anytime. In Texas, you can buy anything excpet hard liquor on Sundays thanks to MAD, etc.

If MAD had its way alcohol sales would be illegal 24x7.

Just reading this thread... wow.

So much ignorance in such little time.

OP-- if you don't like the state law, contact your state representative and voice your opinion. These are state laws folks... so there's no sense in trying to blame George W. Bush or evil conservatives for these laws if you live in a blue state.

Way to punish the store's employees for something that's not their fault. Very impressive and mature of you.

In some counties in Texas everything is illegal. When I lived in Texas, it was a 18 mile drive to the county line to buy beer. Or it was a 5 minute walk to buy meth. Guess what all the kids do for fun? They don't get drunk.

There are many forms of government.

The purpose of the US government was originally to protect the social and economic liberties of it's citizens. Not much more.

Morality has nothing to do with the US's downfall right now. It's because of entitlement, and laziness. People don't want to work hard to become engineers, scientists, etc, because they can get a good standard of living getting a basic business degree. Engineers design technologies and generate wealth. Business people redistribute wealth. Japan, China, Korea, and soon probably a real European Union will surpass us because their children are working hard to give something back for their countries, instead of taking away from it.

Having the religious right fvck our scientific progress and education isn't helping. Nor is the socialist left's idea of government handouts.
