Culture and values have a tendency to change when economy is on the rise and Ireland has been growing rapidly for over 20 years.

Not so much that but political correctness gone to the extreme. The United Nations has been pushing for a similar measure. You can't offend people anymore, especially certain groups that are... easily riled up. I can't help but be reminded of the Jylliands-Posten cartoons.

it'd be enjoyable to see how many buttons I could push with such a law. And it's the only law I'd go seriously out of my way to do so.

I'm not familiar with this movement, but just from reading the article linked in the OP it seems as though this law violates the European Convention on Human Rights. Atheist Ireland or whatever the group is could just take this case to the European Court of Human Rights.
