maybe she had a good entrance essay and interview...maybe she has big dollars, has family alumni, connections....there are so many ways to get into school.

Is she hot? I remember Harvard asks for a face picture in the application.

How about instead of inflating the number of 3's and 4's you make 1's and 2's actually useful?

The best system I've seen is have the average be 2.5 and each standard deviation worth 0.8 pts. Average score is 90% with 5% SD and you score a 91%? Thats a 2.6-2.7 bud.

yeah, these days teachers and administrators seem forget that a "C" is suppose to be AVERAGE.

good for her.

this person in the OP IMO deserves to get in no matter what her background.

second that. Giving chances to people means that the next generation will likely have less fathers in jail and less hookers as mothers.

Apparently she spent her time wisely on activities that let her stand-out. I guess Harvard doesn't care about your ATOT post count.

I heard schools in Texas have GPA's out of like 8 or something so their GPA's on college app's look really inflated.

I wish I could have gotten into one of those schools. I got a 1520 on SAT and 33 on ACT but my GPA was only 3.7 for not doing pointless homework.

Rankings of high schools don't mean jack. They rank based on the number of AP tests taken per student. Meaningless.

She is possibly part black/native american, which would greatly help her chances. Regardless of whether she has good extracurriculars, there are thousands of the best of the best who apply who also have amazing extracurriculars and straight As.

That's because people from texas are borderline mentally retarded.

Apparently not.

The high school education system is bad enough as it is without people fvcking with the standard GPA system. It's good that colleges weigh the value of extracurriculars though, there's more to education than doing some crappy homework that gives you the answers in the back of your textbook.

Good for you

And most colleges will ask for your GPA on a 4.0 scale

In my high school you only got the +1 added to the points for your grade (i.e. A = 5.0, B = 4.0, etc) if the class was honors or an AP class. I think most of California is like this. Most of the public schools in Cali are sh!tty as hell. If you look at it this way, it lets students who take AP and honors courses look better than those who took "normal" classes. Sure you could give more people worse grades so that A's actually mean something, but then you'd have to fail a lot more kids. We already had about a 50% graduation rate at my high school though... (graduating class is always half the size as the frosh class from four years beeforeo)

EDIT: 3.5 weighted is pretty craptastic, I thought it was 3.5 un-weighted when I first read the post, then I could understand the extra-curriculars and essay getting her in. But 3.5 weighted could easily mean a worse than B average.
