Stopped at Target this evening on my way home from work. Picked up Counter-Strike for $29.99. Got it home, went to open it... The box had already been opened? Opened it up, sure enough.

NO GODDAMN CD!

Now what am I gonna do? How the hell am I supposed to prove that I didn't steal it?

That sucks. That really sucks. If you want I'll mail you a copy of halflife w/CS. Technically it'd be legal... and I think Mday could give you his CD key.
 
Duuuuuude, that sucks. You can still at least try to return it. Find the compassionate looking old lady at the service desk and give it your best shot.

As for the box, you couldn't tell that it was already open?? Normally, they have those little circular stickers on either end to keep the box sealed. It's pretty easy to tell if they've been tampered with. If I EVEN suspect something, I put it back on the shelve and get another one.
 
Counter-Strike isn't what I really wanted. There was other content included besides just that. Besides, I like having the boxes, manuals, CD's, etc. Besides, I'm on dial-up.

As for the box, whoever opened it did a very good job. Looks like it was slit with a razor, no visible damage, & to be honest I didn't even think to check.

I would have never expected that.

Standalone CS comes with all sorts of multiplayer modes, including standard Half-Life and Opposing Force deathmatch. Very handy to pass around at LAN parties. 😉
 
Maybe you don't have unlimited internet access? Maybe your call is not local and you have to pay per-minute? Maybe you don't leave your computer on overnight because you have to save on electricity? Maybe you only have one phone line and you dont want to use it up because there might be an emergency call in the middle of the night?
 
Usually when I'm shorted an item, I try to call the store right away even if I'm not returning until a day or so. But even if you did not, I don't think you'll have a problem since you'd be asking for an exchange not a return, that would seem more suspicious. It's possible it was still factory-sealed but some kind of error was made along the way, too. Must've been awfully disappointing, though, to find it like that.
 
Even so, I'm a cheap bastard and wouldn't pay $30 (even for manuals which I don't read and boxes which I throw away and jewel case which I throw away). Hell, I downloaded the thing from the site and burned it onto a CD.

And you could even have it downloaded in a couple of days using Download Accelerator (downloading in the background as your surf). The fact of the matter is, I could much better spend that $30 on something else (like 4 weeks worth of gas for my car).

Hmmm, I find that hard to believe these days. Just about everyone and their grandma's, sister's dog has unlimited access now.
 
NFS4, my grandma's sister's dog doesn't have ulimited internet access. Hell, the thing can barely speak, and its touch typing is appalling. How would it ever figure out how to get online?
 
so let me get this straight: the retail version is standalone and the d/lable is not? and if the d/lable can be used as standalone, where can I d/l it from?

Cheap bastard speaks up again😀 Go to the bargain bin and pick up half life for $15 (or maybe less now). You save $15 and can take your girl out to the movies and throw in a couple more bucks for drinks/popcorn😉
