I found a thread over at FW w/ a coupon code. I would link the thread, but don't know if that's allowed. Just search there in hot deals for Godaddy.

Basically, instead of the $8.95 (or a little cheaper in bulk) you can renew all your .COM & .NET domain names for $5.99 per year per domain.

I think you can renew domains for a max of 9 years in the future.

Spent about $300 :D

Well, they have a $6.95 transfer option on the main page right now, it says with 1 year free extension: Text

Guess you could do that and then renew at $5.99.

I just did some domain transfers from Netfirms to GD, and one of the codes took 10% off a .net transfer. It didn't deduct off a .com xfr since they already have these discounted.

Now I need some cheap web/email hosting since my Netfirms deal is expiring

There's supposed to be a "grace period" of something like 30 days after domain expiration during which no one can steal it. Beyond that you may be SOL.

OT: I might add that Netfirms gave me NO NOTICE that my domains were expiring. I used a "virtual" cc# on signup, and received an "expired cc" notice from them for automatic renewal of the hosting deal. If I hadn't checked on the domain dates or had earlier expiration dates, I would've been hosed. Fortunately, GD's automated transfer wizard was able to complete the transfers, even with only 22 days left on one of the domains.

Godaddy may spamalot, but at least you KNOW when your domains are expiring, well in advance!

Ah...thats exactly my situation. i have a 1 yr contract with netfirms where i registered 2 domains, and got hosting all for 10 bucks. Now I want to keep the hosting there till it expires, but move my domain to godaddy in the meantime.

Hmm...how exactly do i do that?

Go to GD's domain transfer page and initiate the transfer of your domain. Once you have one in the cart, you can return to this page and add more. When you complete the purchase, GD will send an email for each domain to the email address on your GD account to tell you how to proceed. They will send security codes to the registered email address for each domain (i.e., the address on file at Netfirms). Links will take you to a GD page to enter the codes.

You will also need the Auth. Code Netfirms assigned to the domain. You'll find this on the "DNS Admin" page for the domain, accessible from Netfirms control panel.

Edit: Make sure you unlock the domain in the Netfirm CP first.

I was (am) in the same boat. I had a domain registered with Network Solutions. I registered it about 8 years ago, and the email address I used is no longer valid (the ISP literally went out of business, so I cannot use that address anymore). I tried to do a transfer, so GoDaddy sent an email to the bad address asking for approval. Well, of course, I couldn't reply as I cannot access that account. I called them and they said I had to talk to NS. I called them, they said they would change my address. Three times I called them asking them to do it, each time they said they would but it never got done. By that time, it had expired, and someone else parked on it.

Another one was I had a domain registered in the first place with GoDaddy. I got a renewal notice, and it was supposed to auto-renew. About a month after it expired, I got an email basically saying "yeah, we didn't auto-renew you like we said we would, so your domain expired". Someone grabbed that one too. Getting pretty fed up with all of this.

Been dealing with this since 1995. It actually takes 75 days for a domain to truly be lost. Here's the scoop.

First and foremost, no matter the registrar, an expired domain cannot be transferred.

That said here is the progression.

Domain grace period - Up to 40 days past expiration. The domain can be renewed for no additional charges.

Domain Redemption period - At the end of the grace period the domain enters the redemption period. The domain can still be renewed by its original owner, but there are substantial fees to do so to discourage owners from letting it go this far. Typically around $105 + the domain renewal fee charged by the registrar.

Domain name deletion - 5 days after the end of the redemption period the name will be deleted from the registry. Those of us who deal with this on a daily basis know there are specific times the names are made available.

If you want to know when, Google can provide the answer with some digging. Be advise there is some misinformation out there from people who do not want you to know the times, lest you complete with them to register the good names that are dropped. I recently spent a week in Vegas at a conference where a lot of these ?people? were. It was a sad feeling to see the ruthlessness and greed of some of these guys. They are also responsible for the almost absolute need to use Google as a filter now days. I very rarely try to type a domain in hand since virtually every misspelling of any popular domain is grabbed up and pointed to one of those search pages. (Reverse the N and D in forums.anandtech.com and see what happens. Basturds)

I was floored to hear some of these guys will buy, literally, tens of thousands of domains, track them for 24 hours and use some registrars generous return policy to drop the duds without paying for them.

Oh and if you are still with me, thanks, and do yourself a favor and avoid GoDaddy like the plague.

Hit 1and1.com as they offer $5.99 domain everyday. Also be advised everyone will raise their price shortly as the new ICANN price increases go into effect in October (If I remember correctly)

This was perfect timing for me. I had a bunch of domains that needed renewing within a couple of days so this saved me about $20 on a $100 order...schweet!

Thanks OP

Better choices, like the fella above said.

Case in point, I have been fighting for over a month trying to get a customers domain transferred away from GoDaddy. I finally had file a formal complaint with ICANN. The domain is still in limbo. FYI, transfers usually take less than 5 minutes to complete and submit.

hmm, that does worry me a little bit. I haven't tried transferring any of my domain names away from godaddy but I hope they don't give me any crap when I do.

Not to turn this into a godaddy bashing thread, but one of the things they do that really irritates me is the way they try to trick you into buying more stuff as you're trying to check out. Things like greying out the "No" box or automatically selecting 2 year renewals for you when you already chose one year. It's just the kind of thing that makes a company look iffy.
