God = You're never alone = less stress in life?

JEDI

Lifer
Forget about faith, and heaven/hell thing.

i was talking to friends about less stress in life, and a better more fulfilling life.

we're all non-religious, but One person in the group has decided to try God. he's not into the bible/afterlife thing, but rather God as someone to be there for you. it's like you're never alone, and he's there to lend you strength in the tough times (unconditional support).

The first thing that popped into my mind was "sounds like a pet except you dont have to pick up after it."

What's your thoughts?

I've never been very religious but after a recent breakup with ex reading some religious quotes have really helped. Got my mind straight on helping me instead of thinking about her.

same, except that someone cannot provide unconditional support to the fullest.

Though I do feel I can go to my parents with just about any problem, yet I prefer not to. Great relationship with my folks, and my older sister for that matter, but I prefer to work out problems on my own. I can be too stubborn to reach out for help sometimes, which makes living away from family a bit of a struggle since they'd recognize when I'm being stubborn.

Either way, it's all about the feedback to me. If I'm not going to have verbal feedback, I'm going to have a dog. The way a dog that loves you welcomes you when you come home, completely puts away any worries for those few moments. And you can talk to a dog and tell them your deepest secrets, and they will keep on rockin the love. And if you are visibly stressed or overwhelmed, dogs have a way of lending their support.

I think this is the reason why most people get into religion. They go through difficult times and become lost in life. They need guidance. This poem shows the reason why people start believing in God.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin."
I'm whispering "I was lost,"
Now I'm found and forgiven.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need CHRIST to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
and need HIS strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
and need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
but, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain,
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
who received God's good grace, somehow.

I think the Bible is chock full of good advice, even from an atheist point of view, though it takes at least a modicum of wisdom to apply it.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.
It is honorable to stop striving, since any fool can start a quarrel.
A man who does not listen to good advice is building his house on the sand.
A wise man fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident.
Do not look at appearances, but at the heart.
Do not awaken love before its time.
A threefold cord is not easily broken. Woe to he who has nobody to help him up.
Words and beliefs do not replace works.
An unreliable man in a time of trouble is like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint.

And on and on and on. This is one of the biggest reasons why I detest militant atheism. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Thus, the line in my sig- the foolish do not learn from the wise, but the wise learn from the foolish. Even if Christians were deluded fools for believing in God, there would still be huge stores of wisdom to be found in the Bible. Anyone who categorically throws it in the garbage is a much bigger fool.

You're going to get the shit ripped out of you because everyone knows that the Bible teaches BDSM, incest, rape, torture, and genital mutilation as its core values. Christ, well he was just a man that happened to die a terrible death, but otherwise he taught hate and anger to his followers.

The idea does absolutely nothing for me, but if it helps other people get through difficult times, more power to them. People who bash faith and religion tend to forget the positive effects it can have on people.

My point is, even if you were right, and most of the Bible were garbage, you'd still be foolish to not take what good there is to be found in the Bible.

If you're going to talk about core values, how much of the Bible have you actually read, how many times?

Cynicism.

I've read the Bible the whole way through about half-a-dozen times.

Regarding your wager, if the God I believe in or even any half-decent god is in charge, affecting the universe positively and preparing for the afterlife are the same thing.

Here's my bible. It's the shortest book in the world, and solves all problems, from personal to national. It's an all inclusive guide for living a full life, rich with friends who enjoy being around you.

Ready? Here it is(put on your reading glasses)...

Don't be an asshole.

Your hunger is FSMs way of communicating Its' unfailing Love for you. Come back and partake of Its' Noodlyness. Satisfy the hunger of your Soul.

That would fit right in with the christian bible where one is supposed to eat that god's body and drink its blood.

Ideas stolen from FSM. FSM hid Its' secrets in Asia for Millenia, then the great Prophet Marco Polo brought the Message of FSM straight into the heart of the Apostates Lair, Italy. From there FSM spread like Alfredo sauce throughout the World.

exactly. mankind shouldn't need a bible to tell us of certain simple truths of life.

I don't need the bible to set my moral compass. I'm a good citizen and I've gone out of my way to help someone, sometimes to a point that actually is negative for me in the end.

We shouldn't need a book to tell us that one needs to be kind and welcoming to others of your same species. Yes there will be quarrels, that's the nature of a species. Quarrels are a way to prove worth and value to someone, to earn respect. We take it to the extreme, we are very tribal by nature. We fight over territory, we fight over differences in opinion and life values.
In the end, it should all be the same: do whatever we can to ensure the species can continue, and that's the only goal. No other species places anywhere near the same amount of effort into killing each other. More territorial species often do engage in quarrels, true. But things are conceded before loss of life is high.

As primates, our ancestry had very tribal times (fighting over territory is not unique to humans, other primates can be just as brutal to opposing "tribes" of their species when encountered). But most of the time things are shouting matches, maybe the strongest male taking on the strongest male. Respect is given and taken based on the outcome. We're the most stubborn of any animal species though, most definitely.
