Wow! 24 MPH over? You should just be thankful you didn't go to jail. In Arizona, 20+ over is a criminal offence. You get arrested and your car gets towed!

That doesn't sound like a trap, sounds like a normal everyday ticket.

theres a part of the M4 in wales where the limit is like 40-50mph....its a freakin motorway 3 lanes wide. its festooned with camera signs (though i only saw one camera that day)

i think the sole purpose of that stretch is to catch people speeding, since it drops suddenly from the national speed limit of 70mph (ie 80-85mph) to this 40-50mph limit.

Ding, top answer. Welsh police forces know they're onto a money maker and get the full mileage out of it. Once you hit the other side of the M5 junction at Bristol, it's time to watch the speedo. NEVER speed on the Severn bridges, no matter what others are doing cos you'll have a nice surprise at the other end. You're fairly screwed for the next 20 miles westbound thanks to all the overhead bridges with random traffic cops.

Plus everyone in South Wales drives like they're on tranquilisers so you're gonna stand out from the crowd somewhat if you're giving it some.

So after we get passed the buses I get over because I need to make a right hand turn soon, except he gets over as well and keeps going slow. I figure he's going to pick up trash so I have to get past him and go on my way. I pass him quickly (yes I was a little agitated at that point) but still had to get back infront of him. I know it's still speeding...

He's probably slowing down because he's going to make the same right turn... So you speed in the left lane to get *one* vehicle length. To which lo and behold a cop is there to catch you being dumb.

1) Did you even need to get *one* vehicle length ahead of the truck, if you were making a right hand turn anyways?
2) Were you running late to where *one* vehicle length would have mattered?
3) Could you have left earlier so you wouldn't have to drive so aggresively?

Man, I've got a V1 and I almost got a ticket for going 35 in a 25 last night. I'm glad he waited for bigger fish. I hate that road.

Did the speed limit drop for like a mile stretch?
I'd be with you if you got ticketed for going like 44 in a 35, but 59 in a 35...

I got about 80, 75 average on post 65mph roads. I just stick to that speed and lane. I have never been ticketed. The thing that pisses me off is while everything is going smoothly, some fool merges into the fast lane and starts going around 65. When all the other lanes are going higher than that. Sometimes I like to stick around and see that person get pulled over for impeding traffic, but usually I just go around them...

Umm if the speed limit is 50 and you are doing 65 then technically you are breaking the law unless your state has some kind of unique opt out clause. I drive over the speed limit on many roads but if I get stopped by a cop and ticketed it is my fault and no one elses.

Usually if the flow of traffic is greater than 50 or the post limit (which it usually is in cali.) you normally don't and should not be getting a ticket. If you were just following the flow of traffic and not weaving in and out of traffic (endangering) then you could easily refute your ticket with a judge (friends have done this).

BTW, what type of car do you drive? This will resolve whether or not your car accellerates fast enough to make any of this feasible.

I don't think that in all the years I have been driving there has ever been a single time that when I went to pass someone they haven't increased their speed by 5-10 MPH by the time I am passing them. It never fails, you come up on them easily at the speed you are traveling and by the time you change lanes and get beside them they have now matched your speed. It just seems to be some strange quirk of human nature, or in some case, just plain desire to annoy.

It's usually

a) they realize how slow they are going

or

b) they are an asshat.

Leaving work a couple of weeks ago, I left the parking lot and was approaching the stop sign about 100 ft away. I took my foot off the gas to hit the brake and my foot slipped off the corner of the pedal. All lanes in the road I was approaching and the road I were on were empty, so I didn't bother jumping to jam my foot back on the brake to skid for no reason. A "Traffic Enforcement Officer" stepped over into the road and wrote me a ticket for running a stop sign. $80!!!! The thing that ticks me off is that this isn't even a "real" cop as far as I'm concerned. She did NOT have a gun, she was not in an offical police vehicle (her personal care appeared to be parked on the side of the road) and probably is hired to generally write parking tickets. Yes, she wore a uniform and had the official ticket for the state of MD, but all she did was take my license/registration to fill out my info, then copy down my tag info and send me back on my way. I guess it's a good thing I didn't have 15 Felony arrest warrants out since she would never have known!

I'll go to court and explain what happened to the judge--more than likely I'll get PBJ.

I'm sure that the hear that a lot. I really was going to stop, but my foot slipped. Not that it didn't happen to you, but... I'm sure it's a common excuse.

Oh, don't forget to tell the judge how the person wasn't a real officer...

California

Sure there are people who aren't courteous but you can't be pulled over for doing 65 in the left lane ok.

Geez. If you live in So. Cal you should know that cops get so annoyed by everyone doing 80ish that they cut through traffic and weave across all the lanes of traffic to slow people down.

And if you live in Nor Cal, wtf this doesnt happen.

You can totally drive 85+ on 280.

24 over on a road meant for high speeds is not as bad as 24 over on a road meant for low speeds. Apples and oranges. You are going to get pulled over every time if a cop spots you going 24 over on a low speed road.

Come to think of it, 24 over would be 89mph on a road posted for 65. You're going to get pulled over for that every time, too.

More than 20 over is usually called reckless driving.

Yeah, everyone normally drives 80ish in norcal. Meaning if one person hopped into the left lane and was going 65 it would bring everything to a crawl (happened to me and a friend while we were driving, I don't know how fast he was going but we were going around 60-65, I'm just using 65). All the other cars in the other lanes were going fast and there was a lot of traffic to go around him. We honked to tell him to try to get him to move a little faster but he didn't budge or move the least bit faster. He even started braking. After awhile (like 5 min), a cop rolls up beside him and gestures him to pull over. I don't know if he got a ticket, but it is against the law to impede traffic.

Yeah, it's also amazing what a hurry a lot of people are in. I usually drive 80 and people still fly by or tail me. =/

In some small towns, speeding tickets (given to out-of-towners) is the town's sole source of income.

If your going to drive fast I suggest buying a Radar Detector. A good unit will pay for itself in about a week 🙂

I blew right pass a cop who was writing a ticket for some sucker on the shoulder yesterday @ 65 in a 45 zone. I don't think he saw my car.
