I'm not blaming anyone but myself, I'm just against the system that's used and the way it was enforced on me in that situation. No, I didn't HAVE to pass that truck, but I did as any of you would most likely do.

But you passed it at 24 mph over the limit.....

You got caught, deal with it.

are you one of those people that are driving behind someone on the highway ane the person in front of you is going 60 mph but you want to do 61 mph so you get in the left lane and proceed to pass this person which takes about 10 minutes because you are only going 1 mph more than them.....mean while you are holding up the entire fast lane.

No, in fact I wish I had a concealed .30 cal belt fed machine gun in my car for just such moments.

The difference is that if I get pulled over while speeding I won't come on here and post like a whiney b!tch about how unfair life is. I'll pay the fine, get court supervision, and the ticket won't show up to my insurance company.

whats court supervision?

Here in IL you usually are offered a deal from the prosecutor to plead guilty to the ticket and pay the fine. In return you basically promise to the court that you will behave for a set period of time (3 months I think) and the ticket is expunged from your record.

Try having one lorry overtaking another on a 2 lane road, both going at their speed limit or so (which is like 65) when everyone else wants to go 80 or so.

maybe his car is powerful.

I'm thinking it's more likely that he's lying. He probably sped up to pass, much faster than necessary, then just kept on going at that speed. Then when he felt the need to post on ATOT, he remembered that he was passing the truck in the "man, if I could only change things" stage that everyone feels after they get a ticket - he felt he needed an excuse.

BTW, in my area, there is an allowable extra amount of speed to use when passing, I believe it is 20MPH and it is even listed in the driver's handbook. This is probably what makes me not believe his story.

And speeding like hell in a 35 is not acceptable in the same way as when there is a 55MPH speed limit on a six lane highway. 59 in a 35 I personally see as the equivalent of over 100 on an interstate.

So's mine but power is worthless if you can't control it.

If the trash truck was sitting still (i.e. emptying cans) hen you probably could have passed within the speed limit. If the truck was moving then chances are it was doing the speed limit and you had to go faster to pass i.e. speeding.

All BS though.
I see cops that pass other cars on 2 lane roads. The funny thing is you kinda have to pass at 10-20+ mph above the speed limit unless you really want to die...

I am not saying the cops do not do it. I see it like this, the speed limit is 35mph. Yes that is slow, but for a reason. If the truck was moving and not a stop and go pace for pickup, then chances are it was doing the speed limit at the very least and there should be no reason to pass, because if you were doing the speed limit also, you would not even catch up to the truck to overtake it. Now if the truck was stop and go, the best thing to do to get around is follow until it stops again, then without going over 35mph you can pass it up. If traffic is coming the other way then the best thing to do, not to mention the cheapest if a cop is watching and radaring, is to stay put until the truck stops again and try to pass again. Just the .02 from a professional truck driver.
Sorry, I don't think I painting a good picture for this particular road and situation, it's 4 lanes wide (2 lanes in each direction) and the trash truck wasn't picking up trash on it today, but was probably on it's way to one of the side streets. Both of us turned off of another major road and into the left side of our lanes (2 buses are always stopped on the right side for some reason). So after we get passed the buses I get over because I need to make a right hand turn soon, except he gets over as well and keeps going slow. I figure he's going to pick up trash so I have to get past him and go on my way. I pass him quickly (yes I was a little agitated at that point) but still had to get back infront of him. I know it's still speeding, but the grey area is passing and there's no way I deserved a $150 ticket and 4 points.

I hate that, especially when one is full of dirt of gravel or something else that is flying out and putting chips in my paint and cracks in my windshield. :(

Why would I lie? I sped up enough to pass him and when I was clear I didn't continue at that speed and decellerated to under 40. Yeah I wish I could change things, I'll pay the ticket and get the points wiped, but my main rant was about the speed trap system.

So there just happened to be a cop in the 1/8 of a mile required to pass? If this really is the case, find out what the allowable extra amount of speed is for passing in this situation in your state. My state has one as I added to my post. Maybe yours does also.

But if you go to court and say this and the cop says the truck was waaaayyy back etc (especially if that is the truth) - then you're skr3wed.

AHHH, the picture is much clearer now. that 10 seconds you could have waited to make the turn cost you $150. On top of that you decided it would be better for you to cut off the garbage truck because you are impatient and feel that the rules of the road don't apply to you. I *HATE* asshats like you. You DO NOT own the road and don't deserve to be ahead of everyone else. It's too bad the cop didn't give you a reckless driving ticket along with your well deserved speeding ticket.

The problem I have with this isnt the fact that you went 24 MPH over the speed limit. The problem I have with this is that you went 24 MPH over the speed limit IN A 35MPH ZONE!

It's one thing to do 20-30 over on the highway. It's another thing to do 20-30 over by a school or residential area.

define speed trap.

since you dont know what one is ill tell you.

a speed trap is where the speed limit drops without notice. for example you are trucking along at 65 doing the speed limit then BAM!!! the speed limit is then reduced to 35 with a cop waiting right next to the lower speed limit sign just waiting to write out tickets.

you my friend were not in a speed trap, you got caught fair and square live with it and stop crying.

Sorry, that's not passing. If you were on a 4-lane road (not a 2-lane as in your OP) and drove by a truck in the right-lane of your side of two lanes, you were not passing in a sense that you needed to go 25mph over the posted limit. Had you been on a 2-lane road and were in a passing zone, I could see being peeved at a ticket. As it stands, your impatience bit you in the ass.

I don't think that in all the years I have been driving there has ever been a single time that when I went to pass someone they haven't increased their speed by 5-10 MPH by the time I am passing them. It never fails, you come up on them easily at the speed you are traveling and by the time you change lanes and get beside them they have now matched your speed. It just seems to be some strange quirk of human nature, or in some case, just plain desire to annoy.

Tell that to the 3 cars behind me waiting to get tickets too. Define speed trap however you want, I choose to define it as establishing a stationary setup used to pull over anybody going over the speed limit, most likely to meet the precincts impending quota deadline.

I like how alot of people here think going any amount of speed over the speed limit is breaking the law. As long as your not weaving in and out passing everyone you should be perfectly fine. I got about 80, 75 average on post 65mph roads. I just stick to that speed and lane. I have never been ticketed. The thing that pisses me off is while everything is going smoothly, some fool merges into the fast lane and starts going around 65. When all the other lanes are going higher than that. Sometimes I like to stick around and see that person get pulled over for impeding traffic, but usually I just go around them...

Leaving work a couple of weeks ago, I left the parking lot and was approaching the stop sign about 100 ft away. I took my foot off the gas to hit the brake and my foot slipped off the corner of the pedal. All lanes in the road I was approaching and the road I were on were empty, so I didn't bother jumping to jam my foot back on the brake to skid for no reason. A "Traffic Enforcement Officer" stepped over into the road and wrote me a ticket for running a stop sign. $80!!!! The thing that ticks me off is that this isn't even a "real" cop as far as I'm concerned. She did NOT have a gun, she was not in an offical police vehicle (her personal care appeared to be parked on the side of the road) and probably is hired to generally write parking tickets. Yes, she wore a uniform and had the official ticket for the state of MD, but all she did was take my license/registration to fill out my info, then copy down my tag info and send me back on my way. I guess it's a good thing I didn't have 15 Felony arrest warrants out since she would never have known!

I'll go to court and explain what happened to the judge--more than likely I'll get PBJ.

I call that enforcing the traffic laws. definatly no speed trap.

Umm if the speed limit is 50 and you are doing 65 then technically you are breaking the law unless your state has some kind of unique opt out clause. I drive over the speed limit on many roads but if I get stopped by a cop and ticketed it is my fault and no one elses.
