God I hate car repair places......this is why.

So my 95 Nissan Altima was pulling to the right kind of bad so my Dad took it in to our regular tire place called Gatto's here in Florida to do a balance and check the tires. It turns out that my CV boot? blew and that needed to get fixed. No biggie, I'll pay for it. So he comes home and I went to a lan party last night. When I was going there, I still could feel it pulling to the right. So I was like WTF? I come home this morning and I just got home awhile ago. I washed my car, then I told my Dad about that problem. So he wanted to test it himself. So we took it out and he felt and he was like well let's bring it back Tuesday. So when we turned around to go back home, I heard a "CRACK!" and the car made these loud noises. Then my Dad was like "YOU FVCKING AXLE JUST BROKE DANIEL!!" I WAS OMG WTF?!!! :| :| Gatto's didn't re-assemble my axle when they replaced my CV boot!!!! So we were on main road, but it's Sunday so there's barely any traffic. Thank god. We are about 2 miles away from my house and I was freaking out. So my Dad and I PUSHED it, yes, PUSHED it, all the way back to my house in this heat. I thought I was going to DIEEEEE. I cannot believe that happened to me. THOSE SOB'S ARE GONNA PAY!!! :| :| :|

EDIT:
I found the reciept, here is what they printed on it:

Computer Align 4 Wheel Adjust - 54.95

Left Outer CV Boot - 25.00

Labor for Boot - 84.95

Wheel Balance - Lifetime - 40.00

Gatto's didn't re-assemble my axle when they replaced my CV boot!!!!

Umm . . . I don't know if your car is different, but all the boot does on my car is act as a shield. Changing it shouldn't require any major work at all. I don't know that the broken axle is their fault.

Maybe it was the CV joint? my Dad said one of those, I wasn't sure which one he said because I wasn't listening to him while he said it.

Sounds like they are trying to rip you off. If your CV joint was gone and needed replacing, you would have known it by the all the grinding and clicking going on.

Actually it was a local tire place here that fscked up my car and drove me to become a do-it-yourselfer. Some of these places are so incompetent its a wonder they stay in business.

Go after them for the driveshaft. It's gonna be an expensive fix. 🙁

Well they charged me 206 dollars for some sh!t I honestly don't even know what...but my Dad knows. I'll ask him when he gets home. God this sucks...:|

I am a mechanic and can tell you it might not be there fault.

If all they did was replace the boot then they don't have to take the joint apart. But if they joint was already bad, replacing the boot was a waste of time.

Its sounds like you needed another CV joint. You can get a Reman one from Auto zone for less than $100 and have it installed for less than $80. Give or take that is. I charge between $60-100 to install a CV joint on MOST cars, plus the part of course.

Also a CV Joint will not cause a car to pull to one side unless you have posi and the other side is broke, which I really doubt you have. The CV Joint just turns the wheel, the ball joints, tie rods, etc.. control the car when turning. Did they say anything else was bad or use a different name?

I don't know what is worse. The uninformed consumer or the dishonest repair places.

They should have replaced your whole axle on that side. It's about $120. When your car shifted to that side, this only means your CV joint is damage and need replacement. So check your boots regularly and when they break, repair it right away since it only costs $40 each. The dirt bind to your grease in the boot and the joint is crushed.
By the way, they can be sued if anything happens to you and your Dad. So threaten to sue to get the whole job repaired.

I have to get my A/C fixed next week, not looking forward to it. The problem is it is already 90 degrees and going to be over 100 all next week, whew.

Very true, but those who don't know much about computers sure do get a lot of flaming around here.

Honestly, I have a vast knowledge of computers. I don't know sh!t about cars, I may know the basic things but that's it. I grew up using computers, not fixing cars.

I'm an ex-mechanic and I can vouch for Marlin1975. There's no way a CV boot can cause a car to pull. I'm not saying that your CV boot didn't need to be replaced (maybe it was torn), but it wouldn't be the cause of your problem.

Shops love to sell CV boots. They don't take nearly as long to replace as they charge, and the markup on the boot is very good.

And yes... almost everyone gets ripped off (in one way or another) when having their car repaired. 🙁

So what could it be?

When your car broke down did the wheel move wildly, like go to a bad angle compared to the other front tire?
If the tire is in the same position as the other side, then it might be the CV joint. If the tire is a diff. angle then the other front, then it might be ball joint, tie rod, control arm, or some other things.
Its hard to tell by what you have told me.

Get the reciept and tell us what it says they changed and how much labor they charged.

Thanks

True true. I don't know jack about cars but worked on computer for 10+ years.

cashman, I think you should find out what happened and possibably get the repair shop to fix it or sue them, if it's their fault. You could have gotten into a really bad accident and if it's a result of their carelessness, they should be liable.

Listen to these guys, they know their stuff.

Damn, how many miles does your altima have?

The CV boot on my Sentra tore at 60k miles, which I think is too soon considering my friend with a '92 Civic 120k miles and is still hasn't changed it.
(Although my mechanic thinks my car had the odometer rolled back, judging by the rust under the body, and other symptoms/failures. and my friend swapped a newer engine into an old body, so the history on the body is questionable - perhaps it did get replaced previously).

Good thing it only cost me $120 to replace.
The cost difference between repair and replace is negligible, so I opted for a whole new axle.

Damn Nissan's and their cheasy CV joints.
