God does not want me to play Fallout 3.

I had problems with Metro2033 crashing on me randomly near the beginning. What fixed it for me was to go out to Microsoft and get the latest Direct X installer. Ran that and boom, no more crashes. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.

This. On PC you don't need to do this, not much anyway. VATs is likely only there to make the game more playable on Consoles, not that I hate it, but I only really needed it for situations where I was in deep trouble.

I don't have any problem shooting things on the console, I switched from PC gaming a while ago.

Now that I think about it, I recall having weird issues in Vista and FO3 relating to the sidebar/gadgets. The issues have been resolved in Win 7, but I used to close the sidebar before loading FO3 under Vista.

Try New Vegas its far better then Fallout 3 🙂.

Heh, well I already have 2 copies of Fallout 3, so I'd like to try that first. Not going give Bethesda any more money if I can't get this stupid game running.

Strange issue you have, anyway tried a different DVD drive ?..installed latest DX9.0c from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ , nothing overclocked?....there is no reason why it should not run,I have yet to find a game I can't run and thats like 200+ so far ,sure you get the odd issue but nothing that stops you getting the game running.

Something probably went wrong with the original install, and there's a file or registry entry sitting somewhere that isn't being deleted or overwritten when you uninstall and reinstall the game.

You can TRY this, but I doubt it'll have much affect:
- Uninstall the game once again, both DVD and Steam versions.
- Download and run CCleaner. Do a normal clean, then scan and fix registry issues. You might want to make a backup if your PC is a critical system.
- Try reinstalling the game, perhaps even in safe mode.
- Hopefully enjoy.

Beyond that, a fresh reformat is probably your best bet, especially if you notice any issues with other games or programs crashing.

That's the thing, not a single issue with any other game. I've played through the entire campaigns of 3 games (Batman AA, Mass Effect, and Mafia II) plus played countless hours of TF2 and L4D2 with no issues whatsoever.

I'll try a few other things mentioned here, but I am close to giving up.

Nothing else comes to mind apart from what other people have suggested. However, even with the bugs, FO3 was worth it. I can't wait to try New Vegas.

That sucks ... I had zero problems running Fallout3. However, once I tried NV, I'm crashing every 5 minutes. No rhyme or reason so far as I can see 🙁

I'd say the game is definitely worth it though! Good luck in your quest, and I'm hoping mine gets better too!

I liked FO3 a LOT better than Oblivion. If you didn't like Oblivion that is not an indicator of how much you will like FO3.

This is true. I was just so-so about Oblivion. It got boring pretty quickly. Fallout 3 for whatever reason is much more appealing. It may just be that Oblivion NEEDED guns to make it more enjoyable 😀

Fallout 3 is a more intense version of Oblivion. Its possible to like one or the other, or neither, or both.
Do not assume anything, try it out. In fact a lot of folks prefer Fallout 3 over New Vegas or the other way around. Its better to see for yourself than listen to others.

Keith, are you launching the game from the Steam GUI? If you haven't done this already, you may want to try locating the .exe in the Steam folder, and then create a shortcut on the desktop and run it diectly from that (this worked for me for "Shatter", since I couldn't run that darn game right from the GUI for some reason). Run it as an Admin. Also, in the Windows Task Manager, click on the Processes tab & make sure you have only one instance of Steam.exe running. Then, try setting the Priority to "high". Hope this helps.

Edit: forgot to add, have you tried verifying the integrity of the cache files?

Edit2: any weird error messages in Event Viewer?

KT - have you tried running FO3 in a window?

That way you can find out if it runs; or if something is popping up to crash you out of the game.

I keep meaning to try running windowed, but I always forget. That's generally a good way to test. I was too annoyed to try any of these things last so I just played L4D2; I'll try a few of these tonight. Thanks.
