Morgan Freeman: I didn't voice GOP attack ad despite campaign's claims, 'These people are lying'

Morgan Freeman has a very distinctive voice, but the actor swears it's not the one you hear in an attack ad against North Carolina Democrat David Price.

The ad, paid for by Republican challenger B.J. Lawson's campaign, features a narrator who sounds eerily like the iconic actor.

And Lawson invoked "The Shawshank Redemption" star's fame as part of his campaign strategy in a statement issued on Monday.

"In response to numerous queries and enthusiastic feedback, the Lawson for Congress campaign confirms that its latest radio and TV ad is indeed narrated by actor Morgan Freeman," the press release states.

"Lawson was inspired by Mr. Freeman explaining the importance of our founding documents in his narration of a video about the Declaration of Independence and the campaign jumped at the opportunity to work with him," the release continues. "People shouldn't be so shocked that someone like Mr. Freeman would think outside of the left-right red vs. blue dynamic."

Freeman quickly fired back, declaring he had never been involved with the Lawson campaign.

"These people are lying. I have never recorded any campaign ads for B.J. Lawson and I do not support his candidacy," he said in a statement on Monday. "And, no one who represents me ever has ever authorized the use of my name, voice or any other likeness in support of Mr. Lawson or his candidacy."

Lawson's camp backpedaled shortly thereafter, as spokesman Martin Avila told CNN it had been duped by the production company that made the ad.

"We're apologizing to Congressman Price, to the voters, and most of all to Morgan Freeman because this is not the campaign we wanted to run, and not the campaign we have run," Avila said.

According to Avila, a company called MEI Political offered to produce a campaign ad for Lawson featuring Freeman, and the campaign "innocently walked into it."

God is angry!

Actually he did. He told me so yesterday, he said "Cogman, you MUST vote republican".

Though, I did think it was strange he used my nickname.
