I swear you've chastised people in other threads for killing spiders in their homes because they eat bugs. So which is it?

There are beneficial spiders, too. Primarily the daddy-longlegs looking ones that live in your bathroom(typically). They eat and complete for food/space with the nasty looking funnel web weavers, including the hobo spider.
ZV: That's just silly. It is impossible to keep bugs out of your home, sans the use of toxic sprays and insecticides. They were there on your property first.
Now, I'm not talking about things like carpenter ants and termites. If they're eating your house, you should probably do something about it.
But I find this whole "EEEEEK!!!!!!! A BUG!!!!!!!! DIEEEEE!" thing to be silly, especially when it comes to spraying insecticides inside your home.
It doesen't have anything to do with being dirty, unless maybe we're talking about ants.
