God Bless America !(?)

Well, it's the 4th of July and I'm feeling patriotic. I for one am very proud to be an American and am proud of our country's great history. However I was curious as to what other people thought about the good ol' USA. If you're American are you proud of it or not? If you're from another country, what's your view of the USA?

I am proud to be an American, just as I am proud to be a native Bostonian of Irish-Italian descent. In fact, I just finished my 3 year commitment with the USAF and am enjoying civilian life again. Americans sometimes take for granted all that has been accomplished by those who have come before us.

I am proud of the many accomplishments of my country but I am also aware of its shortcommings. As a world leader, America is held to a higher standard than other countries. So when internal or foreign policies fail or succeed, the world often puts us under the microscope.

As a side note, this country along with most others...perhaps with the exception of China, is in the hands of big business. When you understand who has your politicians ear you will understand that America is not always by and for the people. Politicians are very interested in keeping their elected offices. This task unfortunately requires large amounts of capital which corporations are willing to give, thus buying them influence. Campaign finanace reform is small step in taking back our government from the hands of multinational corporations.

Always proud to be an American. Sometimes we are embarrassed by the antics of our elected officials(both parties are guilty) but all things considered, America is still the greateat country in the world.

Oh good gawd, go live in China then. If the Chinese system is the only one where business is not separate from government, but IS government, which is better???

Amusedone...China is not in the hands of big business because it is in the hands of a entrenched dictatorial psuedo-communist regime.

Amusedone, are you of the ilk that says.."love it or leave it?" I can critize my country and still respect, admire, and love it. In fact I am still under oath to die for it.

There is a conflict of interest between big business and that of the ordinary citizen. Thus the US government should not be in bed with big business.

As a canadian i think americans think too highly of them self. usa is not that great. we had some americans up here for 2 weeks in canada and every single sentence was about how good usa is

I'm from outside the US, and I think that the US is one big, messed up country. I'm surprised it still exists, although it's likely that the current culture will cease to exist in only a few decades, seeing that disorder, anarchy and paranoia are increasing quickly.

Jeez man, at least let the US not get any insults for one day out of the year. It's the 4th of July for goodness sake. Tomorrow and every day after that, you hippies and Canadians can do all your US-bashing but not today.

My roommate last year was from mainland China and he says that big business is much worse than it is in the US. Their modern system is more "capitalist" than the capitalists according to him

oh and ps, proud to be an American

i find very little pride in being an american. We leech off the entire world so we can live happy. Billions live in poverty, but ride around in $50k cars and waste away more resources than we deserve. I know this probably sounds hypocritical, but i just thin ktheres a lot wrong with america. Not to mention the double standards and superficiality. This isnt a day to falsely comemorate our nation, its a time to recognize how much is wrong with america, and how much needs to change.

<< This isnt a day to falsely comemorate our nation, its a time to recognize how much is wrong with america, and how much needs to change. >>

And what exactly are you doing to change what needs to be changed?

I'm not sure why you think that but it's not very true. In fact, I would say that the US is as more stable now than it's ever been (think civil-war, civil-rights, cold-war etc.) I think that people's idea of the USA is a lot different than the idea of America. USA=the country and America=the dream (sort of).

Personally I think the greatest thing about America is everything that surrounds the 4th of July. We were able to break away from the most powerful empire in the world and make our own great country. The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution are two of the greatest political works in history. Coming from a European tradition of Monarchy and absolute rule, we put the power into the hands of the common people, and it worked. In fact the US is the longest standing Republic ever.

So, although the reputation of the USA may be tarnished by some of the bad things we've done (although we've done a lot more good, and a lot less bad than most other countries). The ideal of America can never be.

this world would be a mess without the US. sure we've done some bad things, but the good far outweighs it.
if it weren't for the US:
-Germany would have won the war
-Japan would have gained control of the entire Pacific
-Communism would've spread further
-There would be no space exploration
-The ideas about liberty and freedom would probably not even exist. We started that ball rolling

Well said Triumph, the would would not exist w/o the Americans. There would have been WWIII by now and the whole earth would have been fubared

Well, bloody history about eliminating effectively all Indians and taking over their territories. Where were God when all those were happening? 🙂

Nevertheless, God bless today's America

<< -There would be no space exploration >>

Good post, but the credit for space exploration must be jointly shared with the former Soviet Union. If you want to be completely anal about it, the credit goes to the Cold War between the two superpowers.

The song "God Bless America" is one of my favorites...esp. for days when I'm just really feeling patriotic. =P Email or PM me if you want an MP3 version of it.

Anyway I love America! I realize that if we don't do something we could crumble fast, but I still think we're the hottest country on the planet now... 😛

Anyway,
HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!
I'll be lighting fireworks in a couple hours...hopefully I don't get carried away and *accidentally* blow anything up, i.e. houses, cars, etc...

I really have no idea why, but I'm feeling very patriotic right now. Columbus had their fireworks last night, Red, White, and Boom. A local news anchor sang the national anthem before everything started. I really can't express it, but I felt like doing something for the country right after I heard that. I guess it was just how Cabot sang the song... it was awesome...

Can anyone tell that I'm really big into patriotic music recently?

Now, I'll step aside, before any more people say I'm crazy.😛
