40lb weight under chin vs 20 lb weight on each shoulder.

Which is better?
Why?

Putting them on your shoulders should keep you more upright and takes some of the stress away from your back & shoulder muscles. At 40 lbs you're not really doing anything to build significant muscle in your legs and you shouldn't be limited by your back and shoulders. Goblet squats would stimulate more overall muscle recruitment.

Both are great, honestly. I am personally a huge fan of goblet squats because they always place your body in perfect anatomical position. Combined with the stabilization effect of having a weight so close to your core along with high muscle recruitment, and you have yourself a great fundamentals exercise to train with before you hit the heavier bar stuff.

Goblet squats are awesome, very hard to do incorrectly, why are you doing them though, whats your end goal?

been lazy going to the gym.
I don't have a bar at home, just dumbells.

being lazy, I read that squats is the single best exercise to do.
some exercise better than none.

Why not do both?

I do, and feel muscles differently with them. Goblets get my inside of thighs sore, while traditional squats do not. They work my thighs and ass more. For goblets, pull it up to your chin for some shoulder/lats too.

If you feel it in your inner thighs more when you goblet squat you are most likely wide with your stance and doing more of a sumo squat than a regular squat.

Doing a deadlift to high pull with the dumbell will train the upper body a little too, but when doing a goblet squat, when someone is a novice trainee, the weigh should be held in the one position.

here is a great article from Dan John on how to do goblet squats

I understand that there is a different with the traditional ways of doing the exercises. In these days, there is a blending of exercises though. Often times there are 2 or even 3 mixed up to make one. For me, and many others, there is no hard set way of doing something anymore in a lot of cases. We have learned so much from 50 years ago. I also understand foot placement can determine which muscle groups are activated. My point stands, why not do both. At least to see which he likes better. Or just do both if time is not a problem.
