Returnbuy.com is selling refurb Go video DVD/VCR players for a great price. These players retail for $200. However, their refurbs are a lot less. The 4200 is being sold for $55, and the 4250 is being sold for $65. The doewnside is that shipping/handling is almost 20 bucks. But a dual vcr/dvd for either under $75 or $90 is a great deal.

Go Video DVR4200 DVD/VCR

GO VIDEO DVR4250 DVD/VCR

I know that this isn't a computer deal. But seeing the response that the Apex thread was getting, I was thinking some members might want to get a DVD/VCR to go with their 20" TV, flatscreen or no.

Edit - 8/16

The 4250 has gone down to the same price as the 4200, $55. The 4250 has better quality vcr heads and reportedly DTS output. (Thanks to Darth Maul and Kwad.) Unfortunately, the warranty prices are still different. $12 for the 4200 and $25 for the 4250. But, without the 1 year warranty, you cna get either DVD/VCR for $75 shipped (almost $20 for shipping, due to refurb costs I guess).

The 4200 and 4250 differ mostly in the heads on the VCR. The 4250 uses
19 micron heads for (putatively) better video...

There are no known macrovision hacks for these units, which means you can't record
DVDs from the DVD player to the VCR. Kind of a shame, since that would be a nice
advantage to having one of these. GoVideo, since being purchased by Sonic Blue,
has gone legitimate. In the old days, they were hated by the industry for selling
dual VHS decks that allowed you to make good quality dubs of (even Macrovision
encoded) tapes.

From the web site:
"one-touch copying from DVD to VCR for non-Macrovision-encoded DVDs"

How many DVDs aren't Macrovision encoded?

DVD to vcr copying?
Nope. You have to have a hackable machine that disables macrovision for that.
There was another post on this place recently.... but no one seems to know what the return policy is. Which is important if untested features arent working or if there are problems shortly after buying.I couldnt find any policy on the site...
Anyone else?

So my DVR4200 came in the mail today. Got it from ReturnBuy for around $70 shipped.
It's in very good condition--looks like new, had all the accessories except the S-video
cable, which was missing.

Played a DVD to test, worked OK.
Played a VHS tape to test, worked OK.

Won't dub a copy-protected DVD to VHS (as expected).

Plays a burned CDR full of MP3s.

BIG NEGATIVE: Won't play a burned SVCD. I was hoping it would play SVCD.
It doesn't. Big bummer.

IMHO, the inability to hack off the macrovision and the inability to play SVCD make
this a mediocre unit.

But at the price, it's OK. And if you only plan to play DVDs and to record VHS off the air (or
to play tapes), it's a good deal.

I bought from return buy on ebay. The thing I recieved had a few things wrong with it which weren't mentioned in the ebay auction (1 of the things wrong they really should have noticed, the other 2 things were minor, and things I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't as obsessive as me to find). The return decently fast, and I got a full refund (including shipping, which I thought I was going to have to fight for).

Apparently many DVD's are not Macro protected. Copied Collateral Damage and JohnQ with no issue. Will not copy Gone in 60 Seconds.

Wonder what % is MacroVision protected? Seems like 25% or so to me.... Most have no issue copying.

Of coarse I do not copy DVD's to tape. I just "tested" it.......

I bought two of the 4200's from ReturnBuy and enjoy both....

Is the VCR a stereo unit? And if so I assume it has a stereo MTS tuner? Any chance DBX noise reduction as well?

Yes, it's Hi-Fi. Yes, it has a built-in stereo tuner.
I don't recall seeing DBX anywhere, and I would be very surprised to find it.
I have never seen a VCR with DBX built in. Heck, does anyone use DBX noise
reduction anymore? It disappeared from the consumer marketplace in the
early '80s. I used to see DBX occasionally in professional studios, but haven't
seen a DBX unit in active rotation, even in a pro studio, in a LONG time.

DBX was actually a good system, better than Dolby in a lot of ways.

But I can't imagine why you'd care if this deck had DBX built in.

You do not need to hack a DVD player to defeat Crapovision. I should know, because I'm not aware of a hack for my Apex 5131, yet I'm running it through my Yamaha processor (sound and video). Think signal enhancer.....then do a search for Sigma. I have not copied any DVD's yet, but I know it works because I did test it. IMO, if I think I'll watch it again, I'll buy it. DVD quality is so much better than VHS.

It's important to note both products come with ZERO warranty unless you buy the add-on 1 -year warranty option. The warranty for the cheaper unit is only $11.99 ---seems reasonable--- but the more expensive deck has a warranty cost of $24.99. A little too deal-chilling for me. At first I was thinking that buying this with my gold VISA would provide some fill-in warranty coverage, but unless I'm mistaken, nowadays VISA only agrees to double the EXISTING warranty, not provide warranty coverage on a completely unwarranted item. So no help there.
