Love this movie

Now I'm confused which the best movie for 2003 :)
Nemo / Pirates the Carribean / The Last Samurai?
or LOTR: ROTK which I haven't see

I have to agree with all the wonderful reviews here, I thought it a great movie. Except for Cruise. IMO, the man did not give that role the emotion and depth that it called for. Sure, he had some great scenes, but that didn't carry though the movie. If anything, he looked as bored with it all as his character felt at times. And by that I mean exhibiting boredom when it was not called for.

Still, definitely a movie to see!

Sure nice fight scenes and all, but scenes like being shot 8 times and still fighting ruin a movie for me. Also, cruise and katsumoto riding towards a barrage of machine gun fire and the entire army falling yet those two being the sole survivors. Come on...Cruise didnt even have a fvcking helmet. Extreme lack of realism spoils a good movie for me. Just too much heroism. It's not like this is the matrix where ppl dodge bullets!

The portrayal of honor and culture was top notch and I have nothing against that.

I rate it 7/10

I disagree with you. Most of the rifles the Japanese were using in the movie were supposed to be Civil War era guns. Those were far less deadly than even a .22 from today. They'd be more like a powerful BB gun than a traditional rifle.

i thought pirates was ok, i was expecting it to suck, but it turned out to be good, not great, not a best anything
nemo was funny, i like shrek more though (please keep off of the grass, shines your shoes, wipe your...face)
the last samurai was good, but im a big lord of the rings fan....id say samurai had better acting/directing
rotk had kickass effects, both are long (rotk longer) and, while i dont say it about many movies, worth seeing at the theater

You are wrong. Many civil war rifles were .58 caliber. The bullets themselves did quite a bit of damage. BB guns barely pierce the skin and the bbs themselves are extremely tiny and only powered by air. To compare the two, is ludicrous.

Tom's Japanese was actually really good...much much better than those idiots in Kill Bill.

The story was pretty good too. Westernization is a problem in Japan today as loan words have completely dominated their culture. It's very nice to see a movie be effective at preserving the history and culture from a very old country.

best would probably still go to ROTK imho. nemo/piratse/samuri/school of rock are all in the top 10 best though. (can't remember more off the top of my ehad)

The shots, not bullets, were fairly large. But they were balls, similar to what you see Gibson make in The Patriot. Add to that the relative ineffeciency of having gunpowder in the barrel instead of inside a bullet cartridge and the fact that gunpowder in 1860 was far less pure than it is today and you've got a large projectile that doesn't have much penetration ability.

In that manner, it is similar to a more powerful BB gun.

EDIT: The balls I'm referring to are what the Japs are shooting in Last Samurai, not what was used in the civil war.

yes, by the civil war, rifled barrels and jacketed cartridges were out. and the fools still fought like they had inaccurate musket balls, leading to mass death.

It was a long, boring movie with over-the-top, melodramatic acting, contrived sequences and a constant suspension of logic. I'd rather watch bad Indian movies for that. The final action sequence made my eyes water and my head spin. It felt more like a John Woo movie.

Agreed. I really enjoyed this movie as much as I don't really like Tom Cruise (I just seem to like every movie he is in).

It was funny though...half the people who went to see it with me really liked it and half didn't... it seems that people either really like it or they don't.
