Go outside and look at the moon

I'm in MD right now and there's a gigantic moon halo around the moon if you've never seen one before
Look around 5 moon radii

I dunno how much cloud cover you have over there....

but try and look far away from the moon, like 5-6 radii

it looks cool, sometimes it has a rainbow halo, dont know why, I think its from the clouds. What is this halo from? I am in SoCal and I see it, cant be because of the clouds.

Here's a somewhat simplified explanation:

Cirrus clouds have ice crystals in them. The crystals in the clouds are relatively uniform in shape. When an accumulation of clouds are around the sun, the crystals act as a lens, diffracting the light at the same angle, causing the halo.

I think the moon already occulted Saturn... should have been around Friday or Saturday night....

I saw a big group of people outside earlier tonight with two really big telescopes. I guess there was something to see.

Back in 1980, there was a rare night of aurora borealis in these parts. The colour of it was a blood red and there was also a full moon. A halo effect on the moon made it look like the moon was bleeding! It was the coolest thing I ever saw.
