For those who are lazy and are running NT/2k/XP, just open a prompt, and type "net stop messenger".

Well you would have to do that every time you reboot

stop just stops it for now, but its still set to start automatically

I know some of you already know how to stop it, but for those who don't and are getting annoyed by it

$50 says you got that from a popup.

I really should start taking advantage of the laws of washington state that say I can sue anyone who sends me an U.C.E. for I think it's $500

Overview of Washington's Law

Effective JUNE 11, 1998
Washington's law does not flatly prohibit the sending of unsolicited e-mail, but it does make it illegal in Washington to send an unsolicited commercial e-mail using:

False information identifying the point of origin of the message or that hides the true origin of the sender (False Header)
False or misleading information in the subject line (False Subject Line)
A third party's e-mail address (domain name) without permission
The Law is Broken When:

Commercial unsolicited e-mail is sent with:

a false header OR
a misleading subject line OR
a third party's address is used without permission as the point of origin of the e-mail,
AND the e-mail is sent:

to a Washington e-mail address OR
from a computer located in Washington
The law only applies when a sender knows or has reason to know the e-mail is being sent to Washington.

HOW DOES A SENDER FIND OUT IF AN E-MAIL ADDRESS IS LOCATED IN WASHINGTON?

The sender checks with the domain name registrant (usually the Internet Service Provider) before sending the e-mail.
If the information is available, the sender is deemed to know the address is in Washington
Even if the sender fails to inquire about the information, as long as it's available, the sender is deemed to know.
REGISTER your e-mail and take other steps to make your Washington e-mail address available.

What kind of spam do you get with this messenger service? The only spam I'm worried about is email and those damn full/half-screen Flash popups - neither of which have anything to do with this messenger service.

What kind of spam is it supposed to stop again ?!?!

Yep...because I got that one last night when I had my firewall down for a few minutes.

Yup I got that link from that spam last night.
Those popups were really p!ssing me off. I was playing WC3 online and at a critical moment a popup forced me back into the window screen thus leaving my city unprotected for 5 seconds.

Yeah, when i installed XP Pro i kept getting those pop-ups, then finally i got that message about taking it off, a message from god LOL
