Wait, what?

my friends and i have been tailgating for browns home games in "the pit", a lot owned and managed by network parking, for years.

so as i headed to the pit to tailgate for the browns/bengals this past sunday morning i was beyond surprised to see that there was a network parking attendant collecting a "$5 pedestrian fee" from tailgaters to hangout in their parking lot.

essentially a $5 cover charge to walk through a parking lot - a slab of concrete.

when i was asked to pay the fee, i laughed, said no way, and walked away. but i didn't get far... the attendant called a couple of cops over because there was a group of about 15 people (including my friend and i) refusing to pay.

it's not the $5, it's the principle. you simply can't start charging a "pedestrian fee" the second home game of the browns season - isn't the $30 a spot enough to make a profit, network parking?

people weren't prepared to pay the fee to cross through the popular tailgating lot. i personally didn't have any cash on me, and upon telling the attendant that he simply shrugged, refusing my entry. i ended up having to have my friend kayla pay.

when you go to a club to see a band, you expect to pay a cover. when you park your car in a parking lot, you expect to pay to do so. but when you want to go tailgate before a football game with your friends (who did pay for a spot) you don't expect to have to pay $5 to walk.

when approached by 19 action news network parking supplied the following statement:

"The Pit is one of the premier Browns' tailgating parking lots in the City. Network Parking welcomes all tailgaters and all pedestrian visitors attending tailgate parties. In an effort to continue serving our pedestrian visitors attending tailgate parties, we wish to address some of the additional expenses and current liability issues related to tailgating cleanup and crowd control, such as off duty Cleveland Police officers, porta-johns, large dumpsters, clean up equipment and clean up personnel. By implementing these required additional services and addressing the added costs associated with them will only make for a better environment and allow us to continue serving our valued tailgating patrons through the Brown' remaining football season."

seriously, a "cover charge" for a tailgate area. wow.

It's a private lot.. they can do whatever they want. Clearly it isn't that big of a deal since you paid it. No one forced you to go onto the lot. (referring to guy in story)

Besides, the browns are terrible, you might as well save yourself the effort and drink yourself into a stupor on your front lawn.

They're property, they're rules. Easy as that. This right here means it's a snot nosed little punk. WHAAA! I was inconvienced and a property owner didn't let me use their property for free! WAA! I'm entitled!

I don't know about you, but when I go to tailgates 3-4 cars pay for parking and then a mob of people come by later. I'd be pissed if my friends had to pay $5 each.

BTW, yes they have a right to charge $5 but in turn we have a right to berate them for their decisions.

If the fans had any brains not only would they skip the tailgating but the parking and games as well. I bet a couple of Sundays of reduced income from parking etc would bring some sanity back. If the fans just simply pay it then obviously they were correct in their calculation that it would increase revenue.

Its Cleveland FFS. They lost their primary source of revenue when LeDouche left, what do you expect from such a trashy, low income city

Do you spell check before you post?

And seriously, I would have gone home and not paid. He already paid for the ticket (which covers the cost of facilities at the stadium) and his friends already paid for the parking spot, so for them to try to extract more money for a "pedestrian fee" is bullshit.

What next? Are shopping malls going to start charging a "pedestrian fee" for you to enter them, even if you walk there or take transit (and thus don't use the parking lot)? I can imagine how popular that would be.

Analogy fail. The parking lot explained the need for the fee, they are paying extra for cleanup and security. They make no money by having people hang out on their property where the shopping mall is making money by you being there buying things. I bet if you started tailgating in a shopping mall they're going to kick you out right quick.

It looks like the parking lot is cool enough to setup porta potties, security, dumpsters, cleanup, that all costs money and as such they should collect compensation for the atmosphere they provide with their property.

Business does not exist to make you happy, it's there to make money.

I guess I don't see anything wrong with that. You want to use/abuse their property, they need to recoup the cost of having you on their property. You didn't pay to park there and suddenly you get hurt on their property, you can guarantee their insurance would tell them to pound sand.

Obviously the solution is to pack as many people into your car as you can so you don't get charged extra.

Wrong.

A shopping mall has to pay for facilities too, such as security, washrooms, dumpsters, etc. - similar to the stadium.

However, there is no one forcing me to actually spend money in a mall. If I want to go there and hang out, read a newspaper or book, or even browse the stores and not actually buy anything, I'm still using the facilities but not actually contributing to the cost. And yet no one complains about that, since there are plenty of other people there buying things. Moreover, I'll undoubtedly come back and buy something another time.

When I go to a stadium, I am forced to pay for the ticket (I can't just hang out for free, since I'm only allowed in when a game is on, and I have to pay to watch the game) and that should include the cost of all of the facilities such as the parking lot.

Now of course I can't party or hold a rally or anything in a mall as that would be loud and disruptive, and they've deemed that unacceptable. But that's irrelevant to the point that it is possible to sometimes use a private facility such as a shopping mall, for free.

They're property, there rules. Their trying to make a buck so they're.

o_O /facepalm

Holy fuck man - take a remedial English course.

They're = they are
Their = possessive (as in "their property")

You could say "they're trying to make a buck on their property". So there.

He was joking around as the poster fixed Spidey's first abysmal "they're" post.
