LIGHTS OUT FOR 'POWER RANGERS'

THE plug has been pulled on the once-mighty "Power Rangers."

After 17 years, Disney has stopped producing new episodes of the show that was a pop-culture touchstone of the '90s.

Apparently, the five color-coded superheroes - Green Ranger, Red Ranger, Blue Ranger, etc. - are still selling a lot of toys, but have become passé as a TV show.

There was no official word from Disney, which owns the show. But the cast and crew were informed this week that the show has been dropped, according to reports in the local papers in New Zealand, where the series has been produced since 2003.

The show will likely still be on the air for some time - in repeats. But no new ones will be made.

The series, about superheroes who can don and doff their costumes instantaneously to fight the bad guys, was based on a Japanese series.

It began as "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" on Saturday mornings on Fox in 1993 and moved to ABC and Disney's kids cable channels in 2003.

The show, while hardly controversial, did have its detractors.

Some local stations dropped it from their Saturday morning lineups in 2006 when the FCC said the rock-'em-sock-'em series did not comply with government requirements to air a certain number of hours of educational programming each week.

I didn't know the show was even on the air still, but I totally dug it when I was in like 5th-6th grade.

I used to play with a guild of people in StarWars Galaxies that had a power rangers group. There were six of us with different color flight suits and other gear all color coded to look exactly like the power rangers. We even had correct ranger-specific weapons. We'd run out into the biggest PVP location, yell It's Morphin Time! and hit our macro buttons all at once to instantly change armor into the power ranger set. Then we'd run around going HIYAAAAAAAAAAA OH NO BILLYYYYYYY and having and awesome time :laugh:

Aww that sucks, although I haven't seen a Power Rangers show in ages. I did grow up watching them through. I remember the first time the show came out it was so bad ass. Crazy action and good fighting, for a kids show it was amazing. I used to practice Power Rangers moves on the schoolyard later on.

I'm less shocked by the cancellation than I am the realization that Power Rangers have been around for 13 years. Wow. Just wow. That puts a few things in perspective.

I agree, but it could be a keyboard? I just thought of that after listening to it once again. Some parts are obviously guitar but the main riff could be keyboard.

I still remember watching the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a kid, with the floating holographic head guy (Zordon?) and the big dinosaur or dragon mech.
