I'm reading about this on wiki. Sounds like a really shitty situation. The city always had a very high black population, but police at the time were 95% white. Yikes.

Real solution to fix detroit: hire more black cops, arrest 10x as many people

Detroit was not the only city to experience riots in '67 or white flight, but it's the only city that ended up like fucking Prypiat.

I think it could've bounced back a little better if not for its only industry collapsing.
 
I'm sure the demolition of Black Bottom (one of the predominantly black middle class) neighborhoods in the early 60s didn't help either. 🙄

I don't know if this holds true for other large cities but a lot of Detroiters do not emphasize education. It's interesting to see parents respond to calls about poor student performance in school with responses to the effect of 'I didn't need no education to get a good job' or 'The only reason they are there is because the law says they have to be'. They are used to being able to get a great paying job at one of the Big 3 and then being set for life with minimal education and they are passing that along to their kids

Detroit being a shithole long predates any problems with the Big 3. But you are just repeating the same problem: blame the richest party involved.

Detroit has made it more expensive for auto plants to open because the populace is so uneducated. The big 3 would rather go to Canada or Tennessee where they can at least get people who read at a 6th grade level and can follow simple fucking instructions.

I started going into city pretty regular for concerts and other events in '75. I started working in the city in '78. It was shit hole back then. We would drive around at lunch every day and about half the houses looked abandoned even though they weren't. I lived in the city for short amounts of time in the early 80s.

What collapse of the auto industry are we talking about in the 70s?
