Gnome or KDE

Yea, KDE is very visually pleasing, but I have a soft spot for gnome. I'd have no qualms about using either as my front-end.

better transparency and drop shadow support, a menu editor, clearlooks is default now, chiro (or however you spell it) rendering engine, better file manager, The panel looks better if mounted on teh side of the screen, CD ripper, Improved Web browser with more extentions, Evolution looks better, new control center dialogs, Mouse themes, the Evince document viewer (pdf and other file viewer, much better the adobe or gpdf imho), image viewer is a little better, help viewer now uses web browser, search now shows thumbnails, The dictionary is better looking, the improved gnome minesweeper 🙂, better system tools for controling services, a nice log viewer, gtk 2.8 improvments, more standards with freedesktop.org, a actual clipboard that works when you close apps, etc.

You can read all about it here http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/en/index.html

This makes me very excited.

The GTK+ library is already popular among developers who need to support multiple platforms, including Microsoft Windows as well as Linux and UNIX. For instance, artists may edit their images using GIMP and Inkscape on either Linux or Windows.

And now many more GNOME libraries, including ORBit2, libbonobo, libgnome, libbonoboui, libgnomeui and gnome-vfs, can build on Microsoft Windows, making it easier to build and distribute GNOME applications on that platform. While this support is not yet complete, it may be sufficient for some applications, and is expected to be complete in the next release of GTK+ and GNOME.

Neither, but I haven't used either in a long long time. I plan on trying them out when I get a chance.

what do you use?

It depends. I've used XFCE, and it was pretty cool. I keep it around for giggles.
Blackbox has been my standard Window Manager for years. It's easily configurable, quick, light, and minimal.
w9wm is my latest toy. It's not the most minimal WM I've used, but it's close. I'm digging it on my PDA though.

I used to be obsessed with KDE, but I've gotten bored looking at it so much. So I'm starting to like looking at something simple like Gnome again. Although I'm probably going to try out the Mezzo WM with SymphonyOS next. I'm just waiting for at least a beta to release.. It was either Mezzo that was going to be my next WM or Enlightenment. Enlightenment does look very sexy.

We're not talking about Linux GUIs.

You must be talking about the TUI versions of KDE and Gnome then?

Both KDE and Gnome run on a number of non-Linux platforms. I'm pretty sure Gnome runs on Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and pkgsrc based platforms (NetBSD and DragonflyBSD in particular). I'm sure KDE runs on a similar list of platforms.

I've always felt happier in KDE. I like an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink setup and gnome is a little too focused on removing detail for the sake of cleanliness.

haha, oh you were rebuking the linux part, not the GUI part then. I still think you are nitpicking at BigJimbo's statement though (just as I was arguably nitpicking at your statement 😉).
