Gnome 2.0 released

See the stories on Slashdot, etc.

But I have to ask...
Does anybody actually use Gnome?
All of the Linux users I know personally use either KDE or one of the lighter weight desktops.

My experience in the past was that Gnome was very slow (made KDE look fast!) and kludgy. I guess I'll have to try 2.0 and see where it's gone.

I agree - and I am going to try out the new Gnome on one of my school computers and I will respond back. 😉

I much prefer Gnome over KDE. On my 733Mhz PIII box, with 256mb of memory, it is much faster. But the reason I use Gnome, is that I just plain like the way it looks and they way the panel behave. IMHO Gnome is better than KDE in these two areas. That being said, I am going to wait for a distro (hopefully Suse) to come out with Gnome 2 and KDE 3.01 both included before I give them real side by side testing.

I prefer GNOME to KDE - I think it takes more time to tweak to satisfaction, but is nicer once you've done it. Damn modem connection, I'll have to wait till this weekend to bum my stepdad's DSL...

I prefer WindowMaker. I've yet to try either KDE3.0 or Gnome2.0, but I will, eventually. A lot of my friends use blackbox derivatives...

anyone know where the control panel went in 2.0?
where can I set the window manager, themes, all that good stuff

I seem to find bits and pieces everywhere

Most of the engineering crowd I work with use Gnome on HP-UX. I can't recall why Gnome over KDE but there was at least one good technical reason. Once I got used to Gnome, I got to the point that I don't like KDE simply because I'm used to Gnome. So I can name at least 20 people whom I know are using Gnome and not KDE.

I've been looking forward to Gnome 2.0 for a while. This is great news from my perspective.
