I keep seeing the damn GMC commercials on tv and got intersted...

I know about all the other brands, but nothing about GMCs. Envoy doesn't look so bad..sierra looks alright too..

Even so, a lot of people have told me that they are bad..but they have only given me unsubstanciated arguments...

GMC kicks butt, everyone I know that has one loves it, and has Zero problems with them! People who drive over 200,000 miles on their cars prefer GMC or Chevy trucks, because they give great service, and are cheap to maintain.

GM is the umbrella daddy
Buick - Cadillac - Chevy - GMC - Olds - Pontiac - Saturn are the kids

GMC = Chevy. I had a 1986 GMC S15 (Chevy S10 - compact pickup) that I got for $200 that had been sitting outside for years. $500 later, I had it running, and it passed smog and everything. it had about 124k miles on it at the time. I drove it for a few years, even rolled it on it's side once. when it had 147k miles on it, I took it across the country. To Florida, New York, Las Vegas, SLC, Boulder CO, all over the place. I brought it back with 160k miles on it, still unning strong. It was nowhere close to passing smog though, and it wasn't worth it to me to rebuild the engine, so I parted with the little truck. It was a good reliable vehicle though, if not real comfortable.

Oh, and it had a 4 speed manual transmission. :)

My opinion of GMC can be summed up with a long list of foul words.

I had a 1995 GMC Jimmy. Drove it for 5 years, had ~100,000 miles on it.
Good thing I had the full warranty, because for the last 2 years I had it, it broke down EVERY MONTH on the dot!
It wasn't small things either - stuff like the alternator, transmission, brakes, timing belts, etc.. all took a dump at one time or another.
The service wasn't that great either. Ther service department at every GMC shop I went to overcharged me for everything, jerked me around, and were penis-heads in general.

I'm sticking with my Toyota. Awesome car, awesome service, never going back to American.
Interestingly enough, my Tundra is the only full size pickup to be completely assembled in the 'states. I bet GMC can't boast that.

*edit*
In GMC's defense, I will say that the 1995 Jimmy was the first year with the new design and engine, so that may have accounted for problems. However, one of my coworkers has a 1996 Jimmy and hates it more than I hated mine, for the same reasons.
I know that GMCs in the past were very reliable but it seems that in the past 6-7 years quality has started to go downhill, that's just my observation.

That should read "Ford sells the MOST trucks." That doesn't mean they're any good.
While I know 3 people with F-150's that adore their trucks (no problems either), I hear nothing but negative comments from my friends with Explorers.

Every manufacturer, every model, every where will find people who swear great things about thier vehicles and bad things about others. Usually the ones who dont own a particular vehicle are the first to rip it. In general, most modern vehicles are good. Very few will rate badly. Try the consumer reports magazines and buyers guides which show repair records on most vehicles and decide for yourself. Very few people can truly assess more than one or two makes or models in a given line.

Yeah wow, chevy beat them for the first time in like 12 years!!!!!!!

I personally drive an older ford- 1990 that is and it has had it share of problems, as expected from a 12 year old vehicle. Although I can say my mom had a chevy camero, and my dad had a chevy truck from the early 90's and they need an assload more work than my bronco. So decide for yourself. All the newer fords seem to be very reliable. Now 2 posts after this one, someone will bash ford because they got one of the crappers. Oh DAMN, SORRY. then 2 posts after that, someone will bash Chevy cuz they got a crapper - oh DAMN, SORRY.

GM in whole makes pretty much the best american automobiles, and the GMC line is about the top. Great trucks... Comparing GMC to Ford is a joke ...

GMC used to be Chevy with higher grade parts ( such as suspension ect. ) now GMC is Chevy with more luxury. GMC sells trucks only ( and SUV's )

I loved my Jimmy, except for the ratty 2.8 that blew at 80k.

Every circumstance brings a reason. I would buy Ford if buying new because I work at a Blue Oval dealership and get the "D" plan. I can purchase vehicles for less than dealer cost(at times substantially less). I can get parts for 10 percent over cost. I am a technician and can fix them myself. I have access to all the special equipment, all the technical bulletins, service manuals, etc. It would in MY circumstance be STUPID to buy anything else.. :)

We've had two GMC Safaris, great minivans. The biggest minivan you can get and they will keep kicking for 300,000 miles until the engine goes. I've never seen a bit of rust on either we've had (the one we have now is over 8 years old). The only real problems we've ever encountered was that the shocks went in back after about 200,000 miles and the rotors had to be replaced once because mom ran on low tire pressure for a long time and warped them. Very reliable, IMHO

But unfortunately, they are not the norm. I have only seen a few cars/trucks with 300k+ on original engine. One was a cummins Diesel in a Ram, the other was a Mustang with a v6. Both I have seen with my own eyes. My fathers Ford truck had almost 1.2 million on it, but that was with a crapload of engines. ( lost count ) it was an Econoline. He used it to delievr donuts to white hen's and 7-11's Almost 400 miles a nite for years will do that to a truck. The thing was dropping rust everywhere :)

My first truck was a 1957 Chevy swb stepside, 235 cube six, 3 spd with 4.56 gears, it could pull anything. It had about 450,000 miles on it when I bought it, smoked like crazy, pulled the engine apart, it still had standard size pistons, and crank. I polished the cyl with sand paper, put new rings and bearings in it, and it ran great. Drove it for a couple years, then pulled the engine, and put in a 283 bored .060 over.
