Gmail with iPhone

So I happened to notice today that emails (Gmail) deleted from my iPhone haven't actually been sent to trash... just archiving. It seems there's no way to have emails actually be deleted when Gmail is set up as an Exchange account? And if I set Gmail up using the Gmail option in the Mail app, I can turn off archiving but lose push?

Is there seriously no way to set it up to get push and delete at the same time? :|

Uh, mine deletes. Are you using the apple email app or gmail app?

Edit: Like I said, you can get it to delete if you set it up as a Gmail account. But you can't get push unless you set up as Exchange.

Edit: You are right. Even though it said delete, it just move it to archive folder.

Nope. It's how gmail implemented exchange support. Personally I think it's great.

How the hell can google leave out such a basic feature?

Why not just leave it? Not like you're gonna run out of space.

They clearly document this on their exchange site and there are a ton of stuff on the web on this.

This happens with all devices that use their exchange service.

I personally move everything to a tag that I can just delete when I am at a computer.

Because not everyone wants to save every single email they've ever gotten.




On topic, I just created a new folder and throw everything into that one and delete it later on my computer.

Just thought I'd bump this thread to say that sometime recently Google added a sync setting (go to m.google.com/sync on your iPhone) so you can choose for deleted emails to go in the trash. :thumbsup: Google

I honestly didn't even know you could set up a gmail account via activesync for push. I'm gonna go try that now!

umm, in the iPhone, you can go into the settings after you add it, and select it to delete instead of archive....

It exists in my iPad/iPod.. so I assume it should work for iPhone.

Yes yes, like was covered in the first few posts you can do that if you set it up as a Gmail account on the iDevice, but you lose push. You can now set gmail up as exchange (to get push) and still have emails delete properly.
