Gmail w/ Microsoft Outlook

I use Gmail for my email service. My emails remain on the Google Gmail cloud. I'd like to back up my emails in case something were to happen to the cloud emails. Is it possible to have Microsoft Outlook (2007) download a copy of all of my emails without removing the emails from the internet?

Ideally, I'd like to keep every one of my emails on the Google Gmail cloud, but also have a peace-of-mind backup on my desktop.

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Thanks!

Will that setup allow my email messages to remain on the Google Gmail server? I only want Outlook 2007 to download a copy for backup purposes.

yes, the emails will stay on gmail as well. I have this same setup.

Not doubting you, but I'm just curious, with IMAP, will this really function as a backup? I'm not sure if IMAP syncs every time with the Google server or not. Basically, if you were one of the several thousand people that apparently recently lost a bunch of gmail messages, I'm not sure if this would have protected you. Now, I know POP would have protected you, but it would probably be easy to get out of sync.

So you're saying my Outlook 2007 "backup" would vanish in an effort to sync to the mistakenly-empty Gmail account?

To remedy that, is there some way to prevent Outlook 2007 from immediately syncing when opened? That way, if I noticed something happened to Gmail, I could still open Outlook 2007 to read old messages but since I didn't manually sync it wouldn't delete anything?

I'm pretty sure you can configure Outlook to only sync when you want it to. Can't remember the specific place you change the setting, but you can tell it which accounts to include in Send/Receive and I think you can make it do it manually.

You might want to look through this link to compare IMAP and POP for Gmail: http://groups.google.com/group/Gmai...n/browse_thread/thread/d0a9b8e661a1bc02?pli=1

Ok, so I (finally) set up IMAP for my Gmail account. It seems to work great for all of my emails in my Inbox, but it doesn't save any Sent Mail to Outlook 2007.

Is there a way to back up my Sent Mail folder from Gmail to Outlook 2007?
