GMail, Thunderbird, and OpenSSH

I've just recently started to use my laptop on my school's wireless network. I've got cygwin setup on my home pc with openssh so that while at school I can use it as a secure proxy (technically a SOCKS host, right?). But now that I'm on campus for significant periods of time I want to be able to check my email. I already use Thunderbird to check all my accounts with gmail's IMAP and SSL at home. But how should I go about this on my laptop at school? I tried to just set it up like Firefox to use my ssh SOCKS proxy but it won't connect. I'm assuming that I need to change how something is setup on either Thunderbird or cygwin at home, but what? I don't just want SSL from the laptop across the school's network, I do want it to be routed home first then to google, so that it's completely hidden.

It's not. It's just a regular open wireless connection. And I actually haven't even tested it there yet, Thunderbird, I can use ssh fine. It's at home that I can't get it to work so I know that I'm not doing something right and I'd like to fix it before I go back to school.
