Gmail Email Notifications Without Browser?

im looking to see if theres something i can download that will give me INSTANT new email notifications for gmail whether im in a browser or not

anyone know of anything i can download to accomplish this like i said must be instant and must work within windows not browser dependent

I have my gmail connected through the Windows 8 email built-in. I don't use it for email, just for the notifications. I read my emails through a pinned Google Chrome tab.

I do it with MailWasher Pro. Also lets me see mail on server without downloading it - and I can delete it or bounce it.

As someone else said... standalone google talk does this. I don't even know why I have it turned out... I get an email, i hear my touchpad go off first, then my phone, then my google chat talk goes off all within seconds of each other.
