Well, I just tried it with my account, first.last@gmail.com does indeed send mail to firstlast@gmail.com. My address is firstlast@gmail.com format, and first.last@gmail.com and f.i.r.s.t.l.a.s.t@gmail.com also directs to firstlast@gmail.com. My guess is that Google simply strips out the periods from usernames/email addresses.

Someone who created an account with a period in it can give some more details on what their email address looks like in their profile, but it seems periods don't matter when sending email to a gmail user.

And what's with the spaz response? It's a reasonable question not related to the stickied topic. Sheesh, you're going to scare away all the new folks.

You just destroyed the entire argument being made so far this thread. Congrats :p

I'd test it myself but I only have 1 account, it doesnt have a "." in it and I've given away all my invites.

there is nothing to test....

first.last = firstlast
f.i.r.s.t.l.a.s.t = firstlast

and any other configuration you can think of

Ok, I'll assume this is confirmed unless anyone says otherwise because every other post has been by those making one too many assumptions.

Thanks everyone. I wonder why it didn't work for me though, I sent to my address w/o a period in it over an hour ago and didn't get it back... heh.. could it be i spelled my name wrong??
:eek:

Try it again

Hi All,
The topic summary sums it up. I just sent an email from my first.last@gmail.com to firstlast@gmail.com and it didn't come back to me. I'm worried now that emails going that are supposed to go to me are gonna end up in someone elses box! Are they really two different accounts?!?

Thanks!

edit: ** and before you start saying locked/ban/repost... my post isn't about begging for a gmail account like that stickied one is **

yes, it's the same.
but you can only login from the one you registered with (whether it's the one with the dot or not)

I just tested it for myself. I added a random . in my email address and have yet to receieve it. All that has shown up in my "All Mail" folder is the sent email, not the received email. Maybe they are just having difficulties?

EDIT: Guess I should mention that the email I sent to myself with the distorted name was sent over 10 minutes ago and I've yet to receive it.

are you sending it from other e-mail address or from the address itself?
maybe that could cause it.

Surprised it went through nearly an entire page before someone gave an answer.

Answer: Yes first.last is the same as firstlast is the same as first.last+anything is the same as firstlast+anything.

I sent it from that address itself, but I can try from a different address.

Ok, confirmed... I sent myself an email from one of my other addresses and it was received perfectly fine, despite the random . that was not in my username when the account was created.

yes, that's what i suspected. it's probably the 'smart' protection of Gmail that prevent users from receiving a duplicated e-mail. for instance, if you subscribed to two mailing lists and a message is cross-posted to both, you are going to receive only one message.

in this case, since the message that came later detects that there is already an identical one in your archive (your sent mail), then it would delete itself to prevent duplicates.

SOLUTION:

the email you sent to yourself IS in your sent email box. since you sent it to yourself, it will get threaded with your sent mail- open the email you sent yourself from your outbox and you'll see the received email threaded under it... it doens't show up as a new email in your inbox.

Cool, first.last@gmail == firstlast@gmail. No need to worry about some else getting my email.

You guys were right.. I sent an email to my gmail account to first.last@gmail.com and then a second email to firstlast@gmail.com both got to my gmail account with no problem. :thumbsup:

Then I went onto my first.last@gmail account, sent an email to firstlast@gmail and it didn't show up in the inbox... BUT when you list ALL mail it shows up. Also, the email I sent to myself last night finally showed up, it must've been delayed somehow.

Thanks for all the help and input everyone. :beer:
