Hi All,
The topic summary sums it up. I just sent an email from my first.last@gmail.com to firstlast@gmail.com and it didn't come back to me. I'm worried now that emails going that are supposed to go to me are gonna end up in someone elses box! Are they really two different accounts?!?

Thanks!

edit: ** and before you start saying locked/ban/repost... my post isn't about begging for a gmail account like that stickied one is **

Unless they've got some type of aliasing setting turned on, yes, they'd be seperate accounts.

Edit: Hopefully you don't have a common name and no one takes it. If it's still open when they go live, go register the other version of it.

I'm pretty sure they are two different accounts

yeah.. stupid assumption on my part. I thought the '.' was simply ignored and just used as a separator. :frown:

Oh believe me, I'm an asshole. I have problems with people acting like assholes to those they see as inferior, not to mention I don't handle stupidity well either. Just don't give the intelligent members of the forum reason to get upset and you'll be fine. No one gets upset over this kinda sh!t besides the ones who have too much time on their hands/internet thugs.

Good point, I should probably be expecting even less to be honest.

EDIT: drunken grammar errors

Well, I just tried it with my account, first.last@gmail.com does indeed send mail to firstlast@gmail.com. My address is firstlast@gmail.com format, and first.last@gmail.com and f.i.r.s.t.l.a.s.t@gmail.com also directs to firstlast@gmail.com. My guess is that Google simply strips out the periods from usernames/email addresses.

Someone who created an account with a period in it can give some more details on what their email address looks like in their profile, but it seems periods don't matter when sending email to a gmail user.

And what's with the spaz response? It's a reasonable question not related to the stickied topic. Sheesh, you're going to scare away all the new folks.

Edit: If Google really allows someone to create first.last@gmail.com when firstlast@gmail.com already exists, the person with the period in their username will have a worthless account as far as I can tell. Unless of course the redirect only works when the username with the period doesn't actually exist on the system...I think we need to conduct some tests here.

You just destroyed the entire argument being made so far this thread. Congrats :p

I'd test it myself but I only have 1 account, it doesnt have a "." in it and I've given away all my invites.

there is nothing to test....

first.last = firstlast
f.i.r.s.t.l.a.s.t = firstlast

and any other configuration you can think of

Thanks ;)

You can test what I did out if you really want to...just send email to your username with a period (or several) added some place in the username. That's all I did, and all the emails ended up in my regular box (the account without the period in it).

Ok, I'll assume this is confirmed unless anyone says otherwise because every other post has been by those making one too many assumptions.

I should clarify...if you signed up under first.last you cannot log into gmail using firstlast...you must put in the period when you login.
