Gmail and Pop3

So I wonder if anyone else is having the issue I am.

I set up my Pop3 on Gmail, and when I try sending a message from that Email account and I do a test email to my other email, I receive the email from my Gmail account not my pop3 account.

Any help? thanks
 
so...you received messages sent from the webmail interface, but not from your pop3 client.

pop3 actually doesn't matter here. You need to be sure your SMTP email server settings are correct. This would apply to both pop3 and imap services.

this is what the problem starts, I think I cant fix it. Gmail only has "Pop Mail server" as an option and you can only put one in. Receiving is more important then sending but its just going to be a hassle to just send a message.

wait...so you setup an external pop3 account IN gmail...to receive those emails? And you're not getting them?

In that case, I think the best you do is double check the settings, be sure to know whether you need SSL...and be sure that server (work? school?) actually allows pop3 access from an external network.

I know that pop3 doesn't work for me since my workplace does not allow outside access to email through anything but the outlook webaccess.

I receive them fine.. I just cant send them from that email address. And insted it uses my Gmail instead of my pop Mail.


My schools email only holds 20megs and they send alot of announcements so I got a new gmail account to receive emails in, I just want to be able to send from my schools email account because my professors have a chance not to respond if its not from my school email.

It looks like you are trying to send using your EDU email address through GMail. You can't do this. That is why you are getting the "On behalf of..." remark.

Change your settings in Outlook/Thunderbird/Whatever so your email address is {username}@gmail.com
 
Wow...that is so not what I though your problem was.

if you setup smtp with your ISP's settings, and bypass gmail's, then you'll avoid the "on behalf of" stuff. Your sent items won't be saved on gmail, however.
 
When I set up POP3 with gmail, I still had to use SBC's smtp servers. Get the SMTP setting from your ISP, you may have to set SSL on a certain port, google will help.

Ohhhh I gotcha now.

Yeah, there is no way around the "On behalf of.." thing.

 
Yea, lol I found out Gmail sends it as a "Reply to " Some clients will list the reply to email and some wont or do it separately or as outlook does it "on behalf" . I just tested my Schools Inbox and it shows up as the "Reply to" So I am good.

it's not broken is it? I thought this was done on purpose, as to avoid being targeted as spam. It's one of two reasons why I don't use gmail exclusively. The other is individual signatures for each of those profiles.

fastmail handles multiple accounts very well, it's just a little costly. The web interface isn't too bad either, but search is so slow vs gmail when doing a body search. And I've become accustomed to the label method of organizing.
