I think we can safely say that if the General does bring the ute back to the US, AT Garage will burn every example its posters stumble upon ;)

I hope GM is listening, don't do it! ;)

Many Aussies can probably count the number of times they have driven on gravel roads on their fingers and toes
Shens. Most Australians carry knives and eat gator for breakfast and drive 30 miles through back country to work.

I know for a fact that this is all true, plus that they wear khaki shorts and cowboy hats with one side bent up vertically and they wrestle kangaroos

GM knows that most rednecks do not have internet and since the El Camino is a redneck mobile they will be unaware of any internet posts on such a vehicle.

The problem with the El Camino back then and in modern concepts is wasted space. I do think there is huge market of buyers who would like an open truck bed-like cargo area sometimes .. but not enough to drive around a bed with with wheels. They would also love a muscle sports car, but need more more cargo space and rear seating.

The design requirement is satified with a versitile MIDGATE. A number of automakers are working on designs for 2013 already .

This one is something I dreamt up, but I could see something like this happening in 2014/2015. Let's call it the Dodge Muscle Wagon. A muscle car with an open roll cage in the back. But in my "dream", A Recovery Flywheel charges Ultracapcitors that feed Dual RWD EV motors for FREE rear wheel drive torque when you need it most. May sound like sci-fi.. but it's not that far away.

The idea is not entirely new..

And some other nice concepts..

You may want to keep dreaming... It's farther away than you think.

The drivetrain is less than a year away.

youtube search:

1. How does HHV work.
2. Volvo Flywheel Hybrid
3. White Zombie EV vs muscle

Except none of those are the hybrid that you described, using 'ultracapacitors' to store power.

1. That uses hydraulic power storage, idea has been around for a while. Nobody's been able to make a realistic mass produced one.
2. That uses a mechanical flywheel to store the power. No capacitors to be seen here.
3. Traditional EV vehicle with everything dialed up to 11. Big batteries, big motors. Nothing special.

None of the things that you mentioned use ultracapacitors for power storage, which is what I have my doubts about.

Dude.. let me check the schematics again. :)

There are challenges and all 3 are emerging .. but very quickly. The first two can produce 40mpg. I believe currently Formula 1 racing and Porsche have been testing flywheel with ultracaps.. go to 4:04 of this video and check out other videos:

Rumor is Ford Motor has an f150 in the lab doing 40+mpg. Chrystler is working with the EPA a minivan that will do something like 60% better in the city.

But I will give you this.. I am pipe dreaming and getting excited over bits and pieces of progress... But we are close.. likey 2013 model.

oh... found it.. (update on flywheel and ultracaps).. enjoy.

I agree that there will be new technologies, but rumors and development models are a LOOONG way from something that is actually possible to sell. The majority of these "groundbreaking" technologies never make it onto a dealer's lot.
