DETROIT ? General Motors Corp. took a key step toward its downsizing on Tuesday, striking a tentative deal to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese manufacturer, while also revealing that it has potential buyers for its Saturn and Saab brands.

GM has an agreement to sell its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. of China, said a person briefed on the deal.

I'm sure there are big differences between the GM Hummer and the militaries HUMMVEE.
But it sure does look like their military just saved bundle in development costs for their next vehicle.
Hey, think the Chinese will sell them to North Korea? Imagine North Korea fighting US troops in a Chinese made Hummer!

Eh, I dunno about that. I think thats a bit of a stretch, similar looks does not equate to similar technology. I am not surprised though, GM probably won't have a whole lot of large vehicles after all is said and done.

I wonder if they plan on selling them in places like the oil rich middle eastern countries?

The H1 wasn't made by GM, it was/is made by AM General. The funny thing is, the Chinese co that bought it hasn't made an automobile before. They manufacture construction machinery though.

"The company also manufactures plastics, resins and other industrial products, but Hummer will be its first step into the automotive business."

These profits were killed and the brand became a liability as soon as oil prices headed north. It's a smart move by GM. This market ain't coming back because the era of cheap oil is over (it's hovering around $60 a barrel today when there's no demand).

So when this is all done how much in tax payers dollars will we piss away to sell off these entities to foreign companies for pennies on the dollar? 30,40, or 50+ billion?

The military HMMVE isn't made by GM. It never was. GM bought (or leased, I don't know which) the rights to the name, then built a vehicle based on it: the H1. The H2 and H3 have nothing are based off of other GM vehicles.

The thing that hurt GM is legacy/union costs, not building big vehicles. The only thing cutting large vehicles is doing for GM is making them more 'green', which is clearly what the governments goal is in all of this. I'm not going to argue whether thats good or bad, but I think we'd all be lying if we didn't admit this is the truth.

Considering that large vehicles aren't really selling.... and you can't earn a profit if you aren't selling....

So no more "buy American" slogans?...what would those UAWs going to say with their new "non american" overlords.

Considering Hummers weren't usually purchased by the middle to lower class - does it really matter? Those who can afford those types of vehicles are still buying vehicles. Really - the Hummer isn't a mass market vehicle - it's the luxury SUV niche market which frankly isn't going to wither away.

I dont think any vehicles are selling. The small car manufacturers are hurting as well. When the economy was doing fine and people bought cars. The big trucks and SUVs floated the rest of GMs line. With those gone I question how GM is going to turn a profit. Unless they gut the contracts of the Union.

I rather think not. Considering the US military is getting rid of Humvees because they are too old I don't think a civilian version that simply LOOKS like it and is not it (Humvees created by a different company, afterall), is going to modernize the Chinese military.

Anyway, the funny thing here is that the US has now sold to China one of its premier flagship "rah rah America" brands.
So is China gonna start making hummers for the US government? That ought to be interesting.
No; the US government (at least the military) has never used Hummers. It uses Humvees.

Frankly, I doubt greatly there are any big profits left in these beasts. New models were being advertised around here at 50% off MSRP last year. The only Hummer dealer in the region closed its doors last year.

Frankly, Hummer is one of two vehicles (the other being a PT Cruiser) that every time I see one, I chuckle and say poor sap under my breath.

Of course I have to ask.

What will Sean Hannity drive now? 😀

Of course I suspect another Hummer driver Sean Penn is jumping for joy!

you actually bring up a good point (although in your little mind I'm sure you didn't realize it) We need vehicles mandated on the road that the strong points all meet from every class of vehicle. All bumpers should be the same height and the t-impact on the side of the cars should also be at this standard height. This would reduce injuries and death more then everyone racing to get the biggest car/truck/suv.

I think he drives a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. I remember him doing ads for it, and bragging his hybrid gets better MPG then a Camry.

This is correct. In fact the H2 is built on the Chevy Suburban chassis IIRC so except for body tooling, this is a very cheap vehicle for GM. High profit. Too bad Obama is forcing them to get rid of it.

As for the military version, as others have said, they are completely different from teh civilian version. The only thing that looks teh same is the body and that is just wiondow dressing. The underneath where it really counts is all different.

Good move. Hummer dealerships across the US were dying. The brand was on life support. Nobody wanted to buy these pieces of shit after we had $4 gas last year. I'm surprised China wants to saddle themselves with a such a shitty brand.

I'm  at all the people who are defending Hummer. How about you show us a picture of your own Hummer?

Hummer had become not only a brand on life support, but the symbol of everything that is wrong with the Big 3 today. This is a good move. Honestly, I think that China is really a sucker for buying it from GM.
