Wow, is Toyota giving GM breathing room really going to be enough though? They aren't the only other big kid on the block anymore. Plus, I'm not sure if its even necessary anymore. Public attitudes have changed, there's a lot more players on the market to "share the blame" and the amount of factories they've built in the US has probably taken a lot of the wind out of that crazy argument.

Man, GM should adopt the George Costanza way of decision making. If every decision you make is wrong...the exact opposite would have to be right!

Are they trying to kill themselves? GM needs more vehicles with better gas mileage, not vehicles to get red staters to church. (The flat bed is to haul mawmaw.)

General Motors Corp. said it plans to ramp up production at its four full-size pickup plants, including factories in Pontiac and Flint, in anticipation of a surge in late spring and summer sales.

The automaker, which is in dire need of a jump-start after a $1.1 billion first-quarter loss, said it's willing to max out overtime and run the factories on Saturdays to build as many of its stalwart Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups as possible.

"We're continuing to see strength, especially in pockets of the full-size pickup market, so we're bringing in overtime where we see underlying demand for our products," said Paul Ballew, GM executive director of global market and industry analysis.

But ramping up truck production carries risks. GM dealers are already overstocked with big pickups and high gas prices are turning many consumers toward more fuel efficient vehicles. If the pickups languish on dealer lots, GM could be forced to offer big, profit-eating discounts to push sales.

"It just doesn't seem to make sense to me," said Scott Montgomery, sales manager at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn. http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0505/12/A01-179537.htm

It's about time some of those gigantic GM unions feel some pressure for once.

I like my Saturn Ion Redline... fun to drive as any foreign car. GM finally makes a car I like and now they're going to fold. Too bad the Mazda 3 is so slow...

Outsourced to India. Schools nowadays are less about learning and creative thinking, and more about social engineering and promoting "life-styles."

That's just bizzare. What on Earth is making them think there is going to be a Spring frenzy?

This is just cracking me up. I might just have to buy one when they end up discounting them $20K.

Toyota owns tons of patents on hybrid auto technology... I think Ford had to pay Toyota to use some of their technology on the hybrid Escape too

Seriously, what is GM thinking? It's almost like they know none of their other cars will sell so they concentrate on their pickup market which still has a chance of succeeding...
