General Motors Corp. said it plans to ramp up production at its four full-size pickup plants, including factories in Pontiac and Flint, in anticipation of a surge in late spring and summer sales.

The automaker, which is in dire need of a jump-start after a $1.1 billion first-quarter loss, said it's willing to max out overtime and run the factories on Saturdays to build as many of its stalwart Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups as possible.

"We're continuing to see strength, especially in pockets of the full-size pickup market, so we're bringing in overtime where we see underlying demand for our products," said Paul Ballew, GM executive director of global market and industry analysis.

But ramping up truck production carries risks. GM dealers are already overstocked with big pickups and high gas prices are turning many consumers toward more fuel efficient vehicles. If the pickups languish on dealer lots, GM could be forced to offer big, profit-eating discounts to push sales.

"It just doesn't seem to make sense to me," said Scott Montgomery, sales manager at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn. http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0505/12/A01-179537.htm

Looks like GM needs to invest in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly with antipsychotic drug research, using their executives as test subjects.

Good. If El Bloato GM goes down, that leaves more room for foreign car makers to take over, which just HAPPEN to be more reliable and fun to drive.

It's about time some of those gigantic GM unions feel some pressure for once.

I wonder if they are doing all of this to deal a blow or even try to get rid of the Union, as they keep blaming the Union for all of their problems. Just like any other company here lately is blaming their employees for their problems instead of Management owning up to their improper managing.

Well I'm sure having to pay your workers twice as much as their worth doesn't help things.

Let's see those foreign automakers produce as many vehicles as GM and Ford and then we'll see how great their quality is.
Toyota's guality has been steadily going down as they make more and more cars......and it will happen to anyone else who tries to make that many cars, too.

The employees make the cars. The employee's union has ensured that the employees are very well taken care of, much more so than the skill of their job deserves. The have great retirement plans and awesome benefits and they are mostly unskilled labor. You don't have to be very smart or very educated to work on any assembly line.

The union isn't to blame for everything, but they have, over time, greatly accelerated the erosion of US carmaker's market share.

GM is going to die a slow horrible death. Their next project is to make a contender to the International Pick-up behemoth and put all their resources in to making it, then when it doesn't sell, they'll discount them and lose $10K on each one.

Dealers have overstock of trucks and GM is going to ramp up production?
Have any of these guys taken basic business or economics classes?
